Antaresia - children python, spotted python, pythons of Australia - Antaresia pythons - hatchlings
After feeding aggressively for a few months, the baby antaresia snakes calm down, and all of the subspecies are one of the calmest snakes out there, very easy and a pleasure to handle.
The maintenance of any Antaresia python from now-on is simple - just upgrade the size of the enclosure and the water dish and hiding space as the snake grows.

Antaresia - children python, spotted python, pythons of Australia - Antaresia pythons propagation
All Antaresia pythons are snakes native to Australia.
There are no other Antaresia snakes in the world except for those found in their native environments and those which have been captive bred are in the collections of keepers and herp enthusiasts around the world, like me.
I would also like to say that none of the Antaresia pythons, including the Children's, spotted, Stimsons and Anthill pythons, are on the endangered species list.

 genus antaresia wells and wellington
The genus name Antaresia was proposed by Wells and Wellington.
Etymology for the name Antaresia comes from Antares, the yellow giant star in the 'tail' of the constellation of Scorpius.
Three of the four species in this genus were formerly referred to as Children's Pythons before they were split into three species in the 1980's.

 Species Profiles
The spotted python (Antaresia maculosa) is distributed on coastal Queensland, Australia.
Spotted pythons are one of the smaller species of boa and python, with large specimens growing to 4 or 5 feet in length and weighing 2 to 3 pounds.
Spotted pythons make excellent captives: they typically feed avidly on mice for their entire lives, their minimum cage requirement as adults can be a 20-gallon aquarium, they readily breed in captivity and are easy snakes to handle and maintain.

Here is a care sheet for Antaresia pythons (which all have similar care requirements): http://atr.kpjmedia.com/modules/sections/index.php?op=viewarticle&artid=25
The Antaresia snakes were formerly in Bothrochilus, so you may find this snake also listed as Bothrochilus stimsoni.
All 3 of these Antaresia species are apparently fairly easy to care for.

 Stimson Python
The Stimsons python is a relatively small python and belongs to the same genus as the pygmy python Antaresia perthensis which is actually the smallest python found in the world.
Compared to other Antaresia species the Stimsons body pattern is usually more defined and in my opinion it is the most attractive out of all the Antaresia's.
One of the more distinguishing features on the Stimsons is a line or stripe of base colour that runs laterally down each side of its neck and often up to a third of its total body length.

Darrin said that she had hardly been handled and might be "nippy," so I was surprised to find her so calm.

We do have childreni that are patternless as adults, but that’s rare in captivity and in the wild as well, most have some trace of pattern apparent.
There is no record of where any of the US Antaresia actually came from.
Most of the US childreni came from a New York breeder who started back in the early 1970s breeding "red desert-phase Children’s pythons".
