Antaresia - children python, spotted python, pythons of Australia - Antaresia pythons - hatchlings
After feeding aggressively for a few months, the baby antaresiasnakes calm down, and all of the subspecies are one of the calmest snakes out there, very easy and a pleasure to handle.
The maintenance of any Antaresia python from now-on is simple - just upgrade the size of the enclosure and the water dish and hiding space as the snake grows.
All Antaresia pythons are snakes native to Australia.
There are no other Antaresiasnakes in the world except for those found in their native environments and those which have been captive bred are in the collections of keepers and herp enthusiasts around the world, like me.
I would also like to say that none of the Antaresia pythons, including the Children's, spotted, Stimsons and Anthill pythons, are on the endangered species list.
Although there is debate as to the validity of this division (see later) and one of the names used by Smith, I will for the time being treat these snakes as three similar but separate species.
(Ant-hill Pythons Antaresia perthensis found in the Pilbara and nearby parts of Western Australia, are substantially different to the above snakes and are not the main subject of this paper.
Mount Etna, in Queensland is a limestone hill honeycombed with caves.
The spotted python (Antaresia maculosa) is distributed on coastal Queensland, Australia.
Spotted pythons are one of the smaller species of boa and python, with large specimens growing to 4 or 5 feet in length and weighing 2 to 3 pounds.
Spotted pythons make excellent captives: they typically feed avidly on mice for their entire lives, their minimum cage requirement as adults can be a 20-gallon aquarium, they readily breed in captivity and are easy snakes to handle and maintain.

Here is a care sheet for Antaresia pythons (which all have similar care requirements): http://atr.kpjmedia.com/modules/sections/index.php?op=viewarticle&artid=25
The Antaresiasnakes were formerly in Bothrochilus, so you may find this snake also listed as Bothrochilus stimsoni.
All 3 of these Antaresiaspecies are apparently fairly easy to care for.
The Stimsons python is a relatively small python and belongs to the same genus as the pygmy python Antaresia perthensis which is actually the smallest python found in the world.
Compared to other Antaresiaspecies the Stimsons body pattern is usually more defined and in my opinion it is the most attractive out of all the Antaresia's.
One of the more distinguishing features on the Stimsons is a line or stripe of base colour that runs laterally down each side of its neck and often up to a third of its total body length.
I will examine the life history, ecology, and climatic tolerances of a dozen species to determine the risk of feral population establishment, and formulate management recommendations based on my results.
I'll soon be starting lab work on growth rates and metabolism of spotted pythons (Antaresia maculosa).
My goal is to evaluate whether food intake early in life determines growth rates later in ontogeny, as has been observed in free-ranging water pythons (Liasis fuscus) in northern Australia.

Temperature Effect On Metabolic Rates in Antaresia childreni
The purpose of my experiment was to evaluate how varying temperatures effect the metabolic rate of female Childrens pythons (Antaresia childreni).
I used a closed circuit metabolic chamber to assess the oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production in six females with an acclimation temperature of 15 degrees celsius.
Hello everyone,Please join Turtle Times forum, members and the staff in welcoming again and in congratulating Rob B. on his recent promotion to Forum Moderator.
