This antbird belongs to a family of passerines known as Thamnophilidae. This small tropical bird is named " antbird " because many of the species engage in a "ritual" called anting, and their main diet also consists of various insects, including ants.
Interestingly, the social "rank" of an antbird is determined by the size and strength of the ant columns that it owns.
In the jungles of South America, the antbird songs are said to be one of the most beautiful and harmonious sounds in the forest.

However, the support for the expanded antbird family was indeed weak, and both morphological [4-6] and molecular [1,7] evidence suggests that antpittas and antthrushes are distantly related to typical antbirds.
Most noticeable are the position of the banded antbird (Dichrozona cincta), which is nested within the clade with antshrikes, antvireos and Herpsilochmus antwrens (clade B, Figure 4), and the position of the wing-banded antbird (Myrmornis torquata) as sister to the russet antshrike (Thamnistes anabatinus) and the spot-winged antshrike (Pygiptila stellaris) (clade A, Figure 4).
The wing-banded antbird has also been suspected to be related to ground antbirds (Formicariidae sensu [7]) based on similarities in morphology and general appearance [7].

White-bellied Antbird - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The White-bellied Antbird (Myrmeciza longipes), is a passerine bird which breeds in the tropical New World from Panama to northern Brazil and in Trinidad.
This antbird, like others in its family, is a forest bird with a preference for undergrowth in dry or moist deciduous habitats.
The White-bellied Antbird is an insectivore which feeds on ants and other arthropods at or near the ground; it sometimes follows columns of army ants.

THE NESTS OF TWO BAMBOO SPECIALISTS: CELEUS SPECTABILIS AND CERCOMACRA MANU
Bamboo foliage near the antbird nest was closer to the ground (from 2.5- 8 m up), and there was less canopy cover above the bamboo than near the woodpecker nest.
Cercomacra manu has clear phylogenetic affinities with the "nighcans-group" of the genus that in- cludes nigHcans, ferdinandi (Bananal Antbird), carbonaria (Rio Branco Antbird), and melanaria (Mato Grosso Antbird), and is closest to the latter (Fitzpatrick and Willard 1990, Silva 1992); C. cinerascens (Gray Antbird) is the sister taxon to the nigHcans group (Silva 1992).
The nest of the antbird, also in a dense bamboo thicket, was a pensile pouch suspended by the nest rim.

The Antbirds are a large family confined to the Neotropics.
The remaining Antbirds are a monophyletic group, and it is easy to determine what is and what is not an antbird.
But note that while they state this antbird may be "near" a light-gap, on the whole the understory antbirds are "photophobic, shunning even small patches of sunlight" (Zimmer and Isler 2003).

Birdwatching in Ecuador - Diary - Terra Firma Forest in the Amazon Basin
So it is often quite easy to hear an Antbird and, if you are reasonably familiar with the calls (which we are not) to identify it.
I think that the 'macho' thing about Antbird birding is that it can arouse the hunter instinct in you - hearing the call, then creeping as noiselessly as possible towards the sound, trying to spot the bird.
The Antbirds may be the speciality of this habitat, but, for me, the views of the other passerines were more interesting.

Antbird - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The antbirds are a large family of smallish passerine bird species of subtropical and tropical Central and South America.
There are some 200 species, variously called as antwrens, antvireos, antbirds and antshrikes.
These terms refer to the relative sizes of the birds (increasing in the order given) rather than any particular morphological resemblance to the true wrens, vireos or shrikes.

This is where we’ll be attentive for ant swarms and the White-masked Antbird.

Antbird capable of increasing testosterone level when threatened
A team of researchers, led by Martin Wikelski of the University of Illinois, studied the neotropical antbirds, measuring testosterone levels by blood tests taken at different times over two years in the 10-acre natural habitat of a bird species that rarely migrates.
The findings were detailed recently in the Proceedings of the Royal Society of London B. It has been shown that in temperate-zone birds, testosterone in males rises in the spring as birds settle into new territories and seek mates.
But when confronted by other birds in their territory - or even by a prolonged playback of tape-recorded sounds made by potential enemies - male antbirds increased their testosterone and became more aggressive, even in this sexually inactive period when their gonads remained entirely regressed.

TERRITORY SWITCHING AND FLOATING IN WHITE-BELLIED ANTBIRD (MYRMECIZA LONGIPES), A RESIDENT TROPICAL PASSERINE IN PANAMA ...
We investigated the yearlong territorial behavior of White-bellied Antbirds (Myrmeciza longipes) in Panama by conducting 17 experimental removals during the nonbreeding season on both sexes.
In seven of the removal experiments, both members of a pair were radiotagged and tracked throughout the duration of the experiments.
We documented a weak response in floaters to territorial vacancies and found that territory switching occurs regularly in response to experimental removals and naturally within populations.

sound of a Spot-backed antbird was recorded by Otte Ottema in the Bakhuis area in Suriname in May 2006.
It is a bird of the underground of the forest (as many antbirds) and is often heard at the Brownsberg.
It does indeed, as you would expect from its name, find food that is chased by army ants, but also without that help in the forest.

The Orange-throated Tanager and the White-masked Antbird are our quest but we’ll be seeing a bewildering host of other species as well, many of them little known, recently described to science or just damn hard to see elsewhere.
Due to the isolation of the areas involved we’ll be spending 6 nights in camp interspersed with nights in very comfortable hotels.
Other possibilities include Yellow-browed Antbird, bicolored and Lunulated Antbird, Reddish-winged Bare-eye, Orange-eyed Flycatcher, Citron-bellied and Cinnamon Attilas, Pompadour Cotinga and a host of other Antbirds, Woodcreepers, Flyctachers and more.

This species is a true army-ant follower and can be found around the swarms that also contain Bicolored, Sooty and Scale-backed Antbirds and Red-winged Bare-eye.
It will take most of the day to get to Saramiriza but we shall be stopping for river islands on the course.
