 CROATS & SERBS: CHAPTER EIGHT
Ante Starcevic (1823 — 96) objected strongly to Vuk’s Panserbian pretensions in several articles appearing in the ‘Narodne novine’ in Zagreb in 1851 — 52.
Trumbic devoted himself to the creation of the common state of Yugoslavia, constitutional and decentralized, because he foresaw that otherwise after the war Croatian territory would be divided among Serbia, Italy and Hungary.
The internal organization to the state would be decided by a constitutional assembly on the basis of "a qualified majority." The Corfu declaration was signed by Dr. Ante Trumbic, president of the Yugoslav Committee, and by Nikola Pasic, president of the ministerial council and minister of external affairs of the kingdom of Serbia.

By its cruelty, brutality and macabre killings, the regime of Ante Pavelic astounded even the German SS formations stationed in the Independent State of Croatia./1 The ethnically pure Croatian State was the strategic goal of the fascist Independent State of Croatia of Ante Pavelic.
The regime of Ante Pavelic brought the order on "the final solution of the Serbian question", the annihilation or expulsion of the Serbian people from the territory of the Independent State of Croatia, six months before the Nazis took the decision on the total annihilation of the Jews.
This was also the case with the textbooks issued in the time of Ante Pavelic according to which the Croats were always threatened and shackled with Serbian hegemony, while all the evils emanate from the Serbs.

The two men belonged to different generations (Tudjman was born in 1922, Milosevic in 1941) and, with the exception that both lost their parents in tragic circumstances, the events that shaped their beliefs and values were as different as those which shaped Martin Luther and John Calvin.
In 2002, as the ICTY pressed for the extradition of Ante Gotovina, the general who had led the decisive Croatian offensive in 1995, most Croatians remembered Tudjman as the father of his country.

While his idea was rejected by Franjo Supilo, it was reluctantly accepted by Ante Trumbic, who advocated a union at any price, hoping that in time the dispute between Serbia and Croatia would be resolved.
Their senior partner, the Serbian Pasic, wryly quipped on May 1, 1919: "The Yugoslav nation is a single people, with three religions and two alphabets." So much for the "union" which was cautiously accepted by the Croats and Slovenes, uneasy about Serbian domination.
Such fears were voiced by Ante Trumbic in a memorandum as early as 1918, at a time when Serbs and Croats were supposedly enjoying their political honeymoon:

Since Croatian independence seemed a hopeless prospect, they were determined at least to secure union for the whole of Croatia with their Slav neighbors in Serbia, on terms that approximated as much as possible the Illyrian ideal of freedom in diversity.
