Strohm's next undertaking, his first solo-billed album, has many of the same players — Harris is a member of the Hello Strangers; Childers, Love, and Ackerson are among the guests — but heads down a much different path than Velo-Deluxe.
The fact that more than half the songs are outstanding — inventive, wry, smart, memorable — doesn't hurt the album, which is an embarrassment of riches and easily one of the most egregiously-overlooked-by-the-mainstream goofs of the '90s.
After Antenna, Smith took over the bass job in the Indianapolis wing of the Vulgar Boatmen; the elemental intensity of that group's frugal folk-pop strongly informs the Mysteries of Life, the delightful Bloomington group he and cymbal-shy wife Freda Love unveiled in 1995.

NASA began planning for an antenna significantly larger than 26 meters in diameter in 1960, in anticipation of the need to support more sophisticated second- and third-generation solar- system exploration spacecraft by the end of the decade.
The first reception of spacecraft signals by the antenna occurred on March 18, 1966, when Marineræ4 was approaching solar occultation across the solar system from Earth.
In later years, the antenna played a major role in the reception of signals from Apollo manned spacecraft at lunar distances, Viking spacecraft in orbit around and on the surface of Mars, and Voyager spacecraft during encounters with the outer planets.

The two albums, both released 1998 on Hydra Head, served as fittingly perplexing starting points: Straight-up frozen metal with a series of gravel throated vocalists screaming themselves ragged, ending with founding guitarist Stephen Brodsky.
The five of the album's eight tracks that exceeded the five-minute mark seemed to challenge their own structures, alternately careening into full-on prog-metallic fury and diffusing into interludes held together by the most delicate melodic strands.
Antenna does indeed veer beyond Tides Of Tomorrow's lush acoustics, but not quite into the realms of Jupiter-but to even the first time listener, it's undeniably Cave In.

‘Antenna’ is the first full-length release from space-rockers Cave In since 2000’s extraordinary ‘Jupiter’; an album washed in addictive yet complex sounds, and progressive elements.
Since ‘Antenna’ is Cave In’s debut for major label RCA, the album is unashamedly more ‘pop’ and ‘straightforward’ than anything the band have released to date.
‘Antenna’ is an album with the potential of breaking Cave In in a major way, even if it’s perhaps not as engrossing as the more perplexing ‘Jupiter’.

Improvements in technology (construction of more stable and better filtered transmitters and receivers; the shaping of antenna feed optics to eliminate virtually all spillover; and the move to a higher operating frequency, which restricted to a greater degree the direction of the antenna beam) had reduced the possibility of interference from collocated antennas.
Under overall JPL management, the firm and its Australian subcontractors began construction of the Tidbinbilla antenna (on the left in the photo) in November 1969 and completed their work in July 1972.
Installation of the subreflector, multicone, and control-room electronics followed, and during the period of subsystem testing the antenna supported the Apollo 17 manned lunar landing mission (December 1972) as a backup to the Parkes radio telescope.

The band's earlier albums marked them out as talented exponents of the brutally heavy end of the post-hardcore genre: a kind of psychedelic take on Slayer's sheer destructive intensity.
But while little has changed in the literal guitar-bass-drums line-up, Antenna itself is a leap into a newly expansive, effects-laden sound that seems to borrow from acts as alien to the hardcore spirit as Radiohead and Chicago post-rock champions Tortoise.
If you have the chance to buy this album it would definately be worth it although if you have been a partizan fan of the band since the beginning you may be a little concerned by the route they have taken.

Writing for the album began shortly after the release of "Jupiter" in September 2000 with the songs "Day Trader" and "Seafrost".
Doing this helped us narrow down the song selection for the new album we were about to record, because we planned on saving the more linear and unashamed rock songs for the album.
Perhaps the same people who assumed this are many of the same people who would soon spread rumors about us being forced to record the "Antenna" album multiple times until RCA felt it was "good enough", or that we were forced to work with song-writers outside of the band.

The new Cave In album, their major-label debut, is called Antenna (RCA), which is a suitably obscure and pleasing three-syllable title for an album if your last one was named Jupiter but fails to offer even a brief glimpse of what’s waiting inside.
For their part, Cave In have produced your classic major-label debut: reasonably concise, catchy as hell, vocals up front in the mix, a platoon of serrated guitar tracks hovering in the middle distance.
If Antenna is Jupiter on a slim-fast diet, what the weight loss reveals is that an atom-smashing rock-and-roll band have been lurking in there all along.
