Antenna Design   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The EXPRESS antennas were analyzed by computer modeling to include the cable and ferrite toroids placed to drastically reduce the coupling and potential for radio interference problems.
When these antennas are installed on the composite wing, tail or fuselage part the resonant frequency shifts down, an amount depending on the amount of material in close proximity to the antenna elements.
The antenna is then trimmed and rechecked with the antenna analyzer until the resonant point is in the center of the frequency band.

Antenna Analyzer II - Software for the Micro908 Kit
The Micro908 Antenna Analyzer II is a small and inexpensive measurement device designed to determine antenna performance across the amateur bands through use of automatically collected SWR and complex impedance readings.
The Antenna Analyzer II is able to connect up to the serial port of a PC for uploading of raw measurement data and remote control of the unit.
After the Analyzer has completed a manual or automatic data collection scan, it may be connected to a host PC which is running software that uploads the frequency/SWR data from the unit and displays a graphical plot of that data on the video monitor.

Antenna analyzer   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
An antenna analyzer (or noise bridge, or RX bridge) is a Wheatstone bridge where the legs are frequency-dependent complex-valued impedances.
The east and west corners of the bridge are driven with a white noise source, and the north and south corners are connected to the input of a radio receiver which is tuned to the desired frequency range.
The SWR meter works by minimizing the reflected wave from the antenna back to the transmitter, which is minimal when the antenna is balanced.

Not all antennas will be broadbanded enough to completely cover the band for which it was designed.
So, an antenna tuner can be used for those situations where you occasionally operate beyond the nominal SWR limits of your transceiver.

The bridge is dc-coupled from an internal resistor bridge to the antenna port.
Because of that, large antennas should be tested at times when propagated signals in the range of the antenna's response are at minimum strength.
An antenna analyzer could calculate everything (except sign of reactance) from measuring only Vs and Vz, but at certain impedances any small error in either Vs and Vz becomes critical.
