Encyclopedia: Antenna tuner   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
An antenna tuner, transmatch, antenna tuning unit, or ATU matches a transceiver with a fixed impedance (typically 50 ohms for modern transceivers) to a load (feed line and antenna) impedance which is unknown, complex or otherwise does not match.
This mismatch is usually caused when using a non-resonant antenna, one that is not the correct electrical length as compared to the wavelength of the signal.
A tuned antenna is never as good as a naturally resonant antenna due to additional induced losses on the feed line due to the SWR (multiple reflections), and losses in the ATU itself.

 g5rv
The antenna functions as two full-wave antennas fed in phase; combining the broadside gain of a two-element colinear array with somewhat lower zenith angle radiation than a half-wave dipole due to its long-wire characteristic.
Near to each end of such an antenna, the amplitude of the current standing wave falls rapidly to zero at the outer extremities; consequently, the effective radiation from these parts of the antenna is minimal.
The antenna may also be used in the form of an inverted-V. However, it should be borne in mind that, for such a configuration to radiate at maximum efficiency, the included angle at the apex of the V should not be less than about 120 degrees.

ARRLWeb: Antenna Tuner Operation   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
In practical terms, all a tuner does is act as a kind of adjustable impedance transformer between the antenna system and the radio.
In some antenna tuners the inductance switch is replaced with a continuously variable inductance, popularly known as a roller inductor.
Depending on the impedance at the antenna input (and the overall design of the tuner) you may not be able to obtain a flat 1:1 SWR on all frequencies and bands.

ANTENNA TUNER - HOW TO USE AN ANTENNA TUNER
What an antenna tuner or transmatch does do, however, is transform the impedance at the antenna feed output at the radio to a value that your transceiver can handle, (typically 50 Ohms.
It's the SWR between the transmitter and the tuner that is changed with the tuner controls.
In layman's terms, all a tuner does is act as a kind of adjustable impedance transformer between the radio and the antenna.

Antenna tuner   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
An antenna tuner is a device which allows the adjustment of the electrical antenna length to the wavelength of carrier you want to receive.
This allows for example the use of one standard antenna for a broad wave spectrum which is often used in scanners.
However, an electrically elongated antenna is never as good as an antenna with the precise physical length.

 A *balanced* balanced antenna tuner
Contemporary antenna tuner circuits claim to be able to operate into an unbalanced load or a balanced load such as ladderline.
Some may ask: "why not use the balanced tuner design that was in vogue in the 1930s?" As many of you old-timers know, the 1930s-era balanced tuner consisted of a resonant or near-resonant, center link-coupled, tank-circuit with movable-clip taps on the secondary.
These ancient tuners were seldom built in enclosures because near constant access to the clip taps and the inductor(s) was a necessity for changing frequency.

After doing a bit of messing around with frame and loop antennas I found that they all worked much better outside, but their very narrow bandwidth required them to be manually tuned.
The obvious answer was some form of remote antenna tuner so that the antenna could be remotely tuned from inside my shack.
RF was not a problem as both the frame and crate antennas worked well with up to 20 watts without arcing or 'funny happenings' to the servo.

For some installations, it may be necessary to employ the use of an antenna tuner to overcome this detuning situation.
A good antenna tuner for use with balanced feedline would be needed for such an optional installation and would allow low loss Multi-brand operation.
If a tuner is to be used in a multi-band arrangement (all HF bands), a recommended alternative arrangement would be to short the shield and center conductor of the coax at the transmitter end, then connect as "long wire" to the random wire output of the antenna tuner.

Connect the transmitter output to the SWR meter, the SWR meter output to the input of the transmatch, and the antenna to the output of the transmatch.

The article itself was about history of the bobtail curtain antenna, but there was an interesting note: Loren Windom first described this antenna, but he himself said that it was invented by someone else as a modification of Hertz antenna.
The reason is very simple; the Windom antenna was referenced to ground as the feed point was between an off-center side point and ground.

When you make a 1/2 wave dipole (what frequency?) you will get a certain amount of bandwidth (whatever frequency your antenna is cut for) and as you tune up or down the band, the SWR will change because the antenna is not resonant.
The amount of loss in a run of coax to a resonant antenna is pretty low, but if there's a significant SWR on the line, the losses will skyrocket.
Using an antenna with a tuner on a lower frequency than it is cut for isn't the greatest thing to do as the others have pointed out.

 No Tuner Antenna
At a portable location of mobile operation an antenna tuner could be very helpful, but for the ultimate day to day operation, a resonant antenna performs simpler and better.
But by calculating for one frequency in the center of your phone band and another in the CW band, then cutting one half of the antenna for the phone frequency and the other for the CW frequency, the SWR is acceptable throughout the end of the entire band.
If the SWR is not correct, lower the antenna and either shorten the antenna by pulling more wire through the insulator and rewrapping it onto itself or letting out more wire.

The tuner uses a Pi network design which has the advantage (compared to L networks) that is acts as an additional low-pass filter, reducing spurious emissions.

The only advantage to using an antenna tuner is in the rare case you cannot erect a resonant antenna, a antenna tuner will let your transmitter load up into just about anything, but it is NOT and should NOT be used as a substitute for a RESONANT antenna!
