Anterior cingulate cortex - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is the frontal part of the cingulate cortex and includes Brodmann's area 24 (ventral ACC) and 32 (dorsal ACC).
The ACC appears to play a role in a wide variety of autonomic functions, such as regulating heart rate and blood pressure, and is vital to cognitive functions, such as reward anticipation, decision-making, empathy, and emotion.
ACC response in Stroop task experiments (designed to measure adherence to sequential decision-making paths) remains relatively elevated in typical human subjects, as the alternative - spontaneity - is sacrificed.

In 1937 Papez proposed a linkage between cingulate cortex and emotion based on the relay of connections from the hypothalamus to the anterior thalamus and from there to the cingulate cortex.
Recent evidence from EEG and fMRI indicates that the anterior cingulate is particularly active when the subject recognizes that he or she has just committed an error in one of these difficult tasks.
EEG studies indicate that the anterior cingulate generates a distinct signal which oscillates from 4 to 7 cycles per second and that the amplitude of this signal increases with task difficulty.

The anterior cingulate cortex is an extensive area of the limbic cortex overlying the corpus callosum and is involved in the integration of cognition, affect, and response selection (Dovinsky et al.
The descending connections of the anterior cingulate cortex to the medial thalamic nuclei and to the peri-aqueductal gray in the brain stem suggest that this system may also be involved in the modulation of reflex responses to noxious stimuli.
Support for the idea that the anterior cingulate processes the affective components of pain comes from PET studies of patients with atypical facial pain where psychogenic mechanisms are thought to contribute to the perseveration of the pain.

Indeed, previous studies, involving visual and auditory stimuli, have shown that the anterior cingulate cortex is involved in orienting attention towards novel, potentially important stimuli and in resolving response conflicts (e.g., when a stimulus elicits multiple responses and all but one must be inhibited).
We have also identified subsequent electrophysiological responses that originate from the frontal cortex and the inferior parietal cortex that are in involved in orienting attention towards the pain and evaluating it, respectively.
Our current working hypothesis is that the pain-evoked activity in the anterior cingulate detects the presence of a transient painful stimulus and signals the frontal and parietal cortices to orient attention towards and evaluate the painful stimulus.

The anterior cingulate cortex has been shown to play a very important role in the early stages of learning of our discriminative avoidance task while the posterior cingulate cortex is important in the later stages of learning.
However, combined lesions of both the anterior and posterior cingulate cortex lead to a severe learning deficit throughout acquisition, suggesting that damage in either area of the cingulate cortex can be compensated by the intact portion.
This study tested the hypothesis that lesions of the posterior cingulate cortext in rabbits exposed to cocaine in utero will have a more severe learning deficit than that seen with cocaine exposure alone due to the inability of the posterior cingulate cortex to compensate for the abnormal functioning of the anterior cingulate cortex.

Another notable decrease in activation was in the mid-line thalamic area which includes the dorsomedial nucleus, anterior nucleus, dorsal superficial nucleus, intralaminar nuclei, and centromedian nucleus, most of which are connected either directly or indirectly to the cingulate cortex.
Our observations indicate that the pain perception and relaying centers are the cingulate cortex and thalamus where acupuncture analgesia is probably mediated by decreased activation in the pain, attention-riveting and perception, and signal-relaying circuitry, namely the cingulate gyrus and the thalamus.

In a previous post, I suggested that a neural correlate of higher-order monitoring may be in the Anterior Cingulate Cortex (ACC).
The reason was the following reasoning: there is evidence that the ACC is involved in cognitive error detection; detection of cognitive error requires continuous monitoring of both error and non-error case; thus we have evidence that the ACC is involved in higher-order monitoring.
All these studies converge on the idea that activity in the pregenual ACC increases and decreases in tandem with changes in the subjective experience of pain that are not induced by changes in the painful stimulus inflicted.
