Anterior pituitary - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The anterior pituitary (also called the adenohypophysis) comprises the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland and is part of the endocrine system.
The adenohypophysis is a pea-size gland anterior to the neurohypophysis, caudal to the hypothalamus, and sits in the medial aspect of the brain.
The anterior pituitary is derived from the epithelial ectoderm of the roof of the embryonic mouth.

Posterior pituitary - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The posterior pituitary (also called the neurohypophysis) comprises the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland and is part of the endocrine system.
Despite its name, the posterior pituitary gland is not a gland, per se; rather, it is largely a collection of axonal projections from the hypothalamus that terminate behind the anterior pituitary gland.
Like the anterior pituitary, this tissue receives its blood supply from the hypophyseal artery, and secretes hormones into the hypophyseal vein.

It is sometimes called the master gland of the body because all the other endocrine glands depend on its secretions for stimulation (see endocrine system).

 The Pituitary Gland
The pituitary gland is sometimes called the "master" gland of the endocrine system, because it controls the functions of the other endocrine glands.
The pituitary gland is no larger than a pea, located at the base of the brain.

Such praise is justified in the sense that the anterior and posterior pituitary secrete a battery of hormones that collectively influence all cells and affect virtually all physiologic processes.

Several studies have shown that a certain subpopulation of middle-aged rats have an attenuated preovulatory LH surge, and that this is an early indicator of a general decline in reproductive cyclicity.
The pituitary glands of middle-aged animals with attenuated LH surges have been shown to be significantly less responsive to GnRH than those from young (Y) animals.
The present study was designed to investigate the relationship between the in vivo LH surge and the in vitro secretory capacity of dispersed anterior pituitary gland cells from the same animals.

Thyroid-stimulating hormone, TSH, of the anterior pituitary gland is regulated by the binding of the thyroid hormone-activated thyroid receptor to the TSH gene at the same time as the binding of the 9-cis-retinoic acid-activated retinoid X receptor to the same gene.
An unintended side effect of this treatment was a twofold decrease in the patients' serum free thyroxine level and a 40-fold decrease in their serum TSH level, with symptoms of hypothyroidism appearing in 19 of the patients.
The anterior pituitary hormone TSH consists of two noncovalently bound glycoprotein subunits-TSHa, common to all anterior pituitary hormones, and TSHP, unique to the thyrotropic cells of the anterior pituitary.

Prolactin is a 198 amino acid protein (23-kD) produced in the lactotroph cells of the anterior pituitary gland.
Estrogen stimulates the proliferation of pituitary lactotroph cells, resulting in an increased quantity of these cells in premenopausal women, especially during pregnancy.
Prolactinoma is less common in men than in women, typically presenting as an incidental finding on a brain CT scan or MRI, or with symptoms of tumor mass effect.
