Martin Bell   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
In 2001, Martin Bell was nonetheless persuaded to stand as an independent candidate against the Conservative MP Eric Pickles in the "safe" Essex constituency of Brentwood and Ongar, where there were accusations that the local Conservative Association had been infiltrated by a Pentecostal church.
Bell reversed his previous decision and stood for the European Parliament in the June 2004 elections, but was ultimately unsuccessful as an independent candidate in the UK's eastern region, winning only 6.2% of the vote (see European Parliament election, 2004 (UK)).
Bell now acts as an ambassador for UNICEF and as a critic on the state of journalism today, although he describes himself as "too old" for both journalism and politics.

Writer Unboxed » Blog Archive » INTERVIEW: Anthea Bell, Part 1
Inquiring minds had to know, and so we discovered Anthea Bell, a translator living in the UK, and asked her for this interview; she agreed.
In part two of our interview with Anthea Bell, we learn more about how she works, the challenges she faces when language itself becomes a barrier, and which recently translated books she feels have the potential to become best sellers as they enter our markets.
I wonder if Ms Bell would comment on the idea that a translator of prose fiction is better at his work if he is a writer himself.

Based on interviews with Braun's real cousin, the novel is a sympathetic portrait of an innocent girl who, while she seems ensconced in the heart of the Nazi empire, is actually a resistance force of one.
A bestseller in Germany, the narrative is adeptly translated by prize-winning Anthea Bell, who has also rendered W.G. Sebald's works into English; it may well make Knauss's international reputation.
Readers must judge for themselves whether the protagonist's description of her family as outspoken anti-Nazis is revisionist history, but her memories of Hitler and his entourage are bound to excite interest.real-life protagonist of this novel, Gertraud Weisker, waited until after his death to tell her story to veteran German novelist Knauss.

Its multi-layered narrative style, almost devoid of paragraphs, keeps you at a distance yet sucks you in; this is a person one is glad to know, and his half-formed memories resonate with one's own.
I was half-way through the book before I realized that it was a translation from the German, brilliantly handled by Anthea Bell; but translation seems appropriate to a work which is itself a work of translation; Sebald's evocative words and images seem written simultaneously in one's own tongue and in another that is forever foreign.
