Anthedon (AS-24) was laid down on 6 May 1943 under a Maritime Commission contract (MC hull 858) at Pascagoula, Miss., by the Ingalls Shipbuilding Co.; launched on 15 October 1943; sponsored by Mrs.
Anthedon departed Fremantle on 2 October to return to the Philippines; arrived at Subic Bay on 14 October; and began providing repair services to submarines.
On 1 March, Anthedon commenced deactivation herself, and she was placed out of commission, in reserve, at New London on 21 September 1946.

This eight-page September 1945 newsletter was published for men serving aboard the USS Anthedon, a submarine tender that saw action in the South Pacific.
A story in this edition reported Walt Disney "heard that the USS Anthedon had been affectionately called the 'Green Hornet,' because of the green and fl camouflage she used to wear.
During the course of duty the Anthedon performed 34 complete submarine refits, 18 partial refits or voyage repairs and 707 torpedo overhauls.

Glaucus was a Greek sea-god, the son of Anthedon and Alcyone.
The story of his origin is told by Ovid, that he began as a mortal fisherman living in the Boeotian city of Anthedon and one day he caught and landed some fish at a place where there grew a herb with the magic property of resuscitating fish and allowing them to return to the water.
Seeing this effect the herb had on the fish, Glaucus ate some of it too.

She was the only surface warship to win two Presidential Unit Citations in World War II.
Except for the brief periods when he was in transit or putting USS CHANTICLEER (ARS-1) and USS ANTHEDON (AS-24) into commission, Hawes spent virtually all of World War II at sea in the Pacific in command of his three ships.
When he put ANTHEDON into commission, 92% of his crew were inductees and had never been to sea, but he sailed directly from commissioning to the Pacific war and within two hours of his arrival was servicing submarines.
