Anthem for Doomed Youth is one of the best-known and most popular of Wilfred Owen's poems.
The poem itself is a lament for young soldiers whose lives were unnecessarily lost in World War I. Owen met and became close friends with another poet at the hospital, Siegfried Sassoon, and asked for his assistance in polishing his rough drafts.
It was Sassoon who named it 'Anthem', and who substituted 'Doomed' for 'Dead'; the famous epithet of "patient minds" is also a correction of his.

These young men could so easily have been our own sons, brothers, lovers; and it is a strength of this exhibition that it forces you to look again at your own sons and their friends and give thanks that they have not been exposed to such deadly self-sacrifice.

The bleakly sensual Youth Mourning by Clausen (note the ambiguity – the figure has blonde hair) ended the exhibition, and a small study room full of books (yet only three seats) and etchings was left for those who didn’t yet want to shoot all the way downstairs to the café.
Anthem for Doomed Youth was a remarkable achievement, bringing together so many of the greatest names in war poetry in such a thorough way.
Of the poets represented in the exhibition, seven of the twelve were killed in the war (the youngest was nineteen), four survived to live well past their allocated threescore years and ten (the oldest was ninety), and Ivor Gurney belongs to neither group, remaining a Doomed Youth in his own category.

 poem
Wilfred Owen's World War I poem "Anthem for Doomed Youth" is meant to convey the sharp contrast between a civilian's elaborate funeral and the general apathy towards the death of a soldier.
The poem speaks of how trivial a soldier's life is and goes as far as comparing a soldier's life to the life of a cow being led to the slaughter.
The anthem that they chant is not one of patriotism and hope but is instead about wasted lives and despair.

On the other side, poets like Trakl grasped the truth even quicker : for Sorley the sight of German dead will have appalled him as much as the British : 'Victor and vanquished are a-one in death'; a dead 'Fritz' was a dead colleague.

Wilfred Owen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
His shocking, realistic war poetry on the horrors of trench and gas warfare was heavily influenced by his friend Siegfried Sassoon and sat in stark contrast to both the public perception of war at the time, and to the patriotic verse written earlier by war poets such as Rupert Brooke.
Owen is regarded by some as the leading poet of the First World War, known for his war poetry on the horrors of trench and gas warfare.
The first verse of "Anthem for Doomed Youth" is recited by Bruce Dickinson as an introduction to the live performance of "Passchendaele" on the Iron Maiden live album Death on the Road.

 'Anthem for Doomed Youth' Analysis
Owen considered Anthem was his best war poem along with The Next War.
This sonnet is possibly my favourite because of the perfectly purposeful use of rhyme and alliteration, skilfully matched with the powerfully pitched poignancy of the subject matter.
The 'doomed youth' are framed in two key images: a 'hasty' funeral at the front in the octet, and a more intimate family wake in the sextet.
