ANTHIM THE IBERIAN, a notable figure in the ecclesiastical history of Rumania.
A Georgian by birth, he came to Rumania early in the second half of the 17th century, as a simple monk.
A man of great oratorical power, Anthim delivered a series of sermons (Didahii), and some of his pastoral letters are models of style and of language as well as of exact and beautiful printing.

In 1709 Anthim was a founder of the first Georgian printing press in Tbilisi; he also trained Georgians in the art of printing, and cut the type with which under his pupil Mihail Ishtvanovitch they printed the first of Georgian Gospels (1710).
Anthim was captured by the Ottomans while he was taking the trip, and assassinated somewhere in modern-day Bulgaria (his body would have been discarded in the Maritsa or the Tundzha).
In 1992 Anthim was canonized by the Romanian Orthodox Church.

A Georgian by birth (the appelation "Iberian" has its origins in the ancient Kingdom of Iberia in eastern Georgia, not from the Iberian peninsula), he came to Romania in the second half of the 17th century, as a simple monk.
Anthim was also the first to introduce Oriental founts of type into Romania, and he printed there the first Arabic missal for the Christians of the East (Râmnicu, 1702).

With the help of the prominent Georgian cleric Anthim the Iberian (died in 1716), archbishop of Wallachia (present Romania) and one of the outstanding figures in the history of the Rumanian Church, King Vakhtang set about installing a printing plant in Tbilisi.
Archbishop Anthim was himself a master printer and engraver of the first order and pioneer in Rumanian printing as well as in the provision of sacred literature fr the Christian communities of Syria and Levant.
It was one of Anthim's disciples, the master printer Mihaî Isvanovicî, known in Georgia as Mikheil Stepaneshvili, who came to Tbilisi to open first Georgian press.
