John Lennon - Anthology | Album Review @ Music-Critic.com : the source for music reviews, interviews, articles, and ...
Compiled meticulously and painstakingly by Yoko Ono, Anthology is not a 'greatest hits' package, but rather a deep, complex, and often frustrating portrait of perhaps the greatest genius rock and roll has ever known.
Anthology is more akin to the Beatles' recent compilations of the same name - a nitpickers guide to John Lennon, if you will.
The most rewarding part of this anthology coincides with what Lennon thought to be the most important part of his own life - the last years, in which he began to see his son grow up.

The Beatles Anthology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Beatles Anthology is the name of a documentary series, a series of three albums and a book, all of which focus on the history of the popular rock band The Beatles.
Approximately coinciding with the release of the "Free as a Bird" single and Anthology 1 album (the first of three double-CD albums), The Beatles Anthology series of documentaries was broadcast on television in 1995.
The success of the Anthology albums was parodied by the release of The Rutles' Archaeology some months later.

Anthology 3 - The Beatles - Song Listings
The final installment of the Anthology series has two discs of previously unreleased material from the White Album era through the group's demise in early 1970.
Also, by this time the Beatles had perfected their approach to recording, meaning that even the early/alternate versions of many of their cuts were often of outstanding quality.
As on previous Anthology sets, some of these alternates are only very slightly different from the official versions; the oldies covers from the Let It Be era are off-the-cuff jams that aren't up to the group's usual level of brilliance.

Their first album, No Depression, mixed classic country and folk songs such as "Whiskey Bottle" and "John Hardy" with melodic guitar based tracks, "Screen Door" and twang-laced punk rock, "Graveyard Shift." The end result is an album considered by many to be the defining work of the alt-country musical movement.
The 21-track Anthology album captures a perfect sampling of Uncle Tupelo's sound, as all of the bands albums are represented on the album in a fully re-mastered edition.
The songs on the album are represented chronologically on the album, which helps paint a picture of the way the sound and presence of the band evolved over time.

The Centennial Anthology, MP3 Album Music Download at eMusic
Many of the countless Louis Armstrong anthologies that have been assembled over the years have focused on a particular period of the seminal trumpeter/singer's career--perhaps his Hot Five/Hot Seven jewels of the ‘20s, perhaps Armstrong in the ‘40s or ‘50s.
The Centennial Anthology is a two-disc set, though not a two-CD set; the first disc is a 58-minute audio CD spanning 1928-1967, the second a DVD spanning 1932-1967.
The audio CD pays the most attention to the early ‘30s, while the DVD tends to favor the ‘60s; but taken as a whole, The Centennial Anthology points to the fact that Satchmo was not someone who had good periods and bad periods.

This anthology tries hard to encapsulate those three years and, while it is destined to fail, it ends up being the best of the three Anthology double-discs.
The rest of the CD, though, has versions similar to their album counterparts, and while they are fun to hear they don't add much to the Beatles canon.
All others, though, would do well to purchase the five albums this set encompasses, five of the best albums in rock history, to hear what the songs on this anthology led up to.

Anthology 2 has two archival gems: the song's first studio take, with Paul calling out chords to the sidemen, and its first public rendition, to which he brings a Liverpudlian tang ("Now it lukes as though they're here to stay") and a choirboy's urgent purity.

Deciding 1976's "The Best Of The Band" wasn't enough (or wanting to have a product out to compete with "The Last Waltz"), Capitol released the two-LP "Anthology", a skimpy 20-track, two-LP set with liner notes by rock critic Robert Palmer.

John Entwistle - So Who's the Bass Player: The Ox Anthology (Album Review)
Not surprisingly, the selections on the 2-disc, 38-track retrospective So Who’s the Bass Player: The Ox Anthology that were culled from these initial forays hold a distinctive, Who-inflected hue.
As his work outside The Who continued, however, the quality of Entwistle’s recordings began to decline, and because So Who’s the Bass Player: The Ox Anthology offers such a comprehensive overview of the enigmatic bass player’s varied side projects, it, too, suffers considerably as it trudges through the years.
The bulk of the material that was re-worked from The Who’s canon offers little in the way of new insight; only Heaven and Hell is given a different arrangement, and it’s an inferior one, at that.

Branford Marsalis - The Steep Anthology (Album Review)
The Steep Anthology merely scratches the surface of Branford Marsalis’ recordings, yet it succeeds in painting the jazzier aspects of his career with supreme clarity.
Each of the compilations’ ten tracks views his stylistic approach from a different angle, shifting from the swinging, New Orleans blues of Sidney in Da Haus to a tranquil cover of Leonard Bernstein’s Maria to the masterful modal jazz workout Spartacus.
While the inclusion of his forays into RandB, hip-hop, classical, reggae, and rock would have offered an even broader glimpse of Marsalis’ grand vision, it’s within the jazz world that he has truly excelled to become the most talented saxophonist of his generation.
