Film is an incredible tool, a cultural tool to enhance people's lives, and somehow in the process of making millions and millions of dollars, many people have forgotten that.
By preserving film we are preserving one of the best aspects of American culture in the 20th century, which is the avant-garde film made in America.

 Harry Smith Archives / Mahagonny
The film was closely timed to the 1930 Bertolt Brecht-Kurt Weill opera ''The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny,'' an ironic epic about a mythical American city, founded on the principles of leisure and absolute liberty, that collapses under the growing burden of work and social regulation.
The film, Smith said, was based on a precise mathematical analysis of the ''Mahagonny'' score, which he particularly liked for its blend of European and African elements.
It isn't clear what formula he was using or what elements he was cuing to, but the viewer does observe a logic and a progression in the way Smith varied the lengths of his shots and the nature of his imagery.
