Anthology Drama   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Anthology drama was an early American television series format or genre in which each episode was a discrete story/play rather than a weekly return to the same setting, characters, and stars.
In the history of American television the anthology dramas that were broadcast live from New York are often considered the epitome of the genre and of television's "golden age" of the 1950s.
There were, however, several variations on the anthology drama series, and not all were critically acclaimed.

In its origin again, the medieval drama was not unlike the drama of the Greeks,--in that the germ or it was religious, and that it was slowly elaborated from what was at first only a casual accompaniment of public worship.
The new form had its birth actually at the base of the altar and at the foot of the pulpit; and it was fostered by the Christian church, the very organization that had cursed the old form when that was decadent and corrupted.
Coming into being as an illustrative incident of the service on certain special days of the ecclesiastical year, the drama grew sturdily within the walls of the church until it was strong enough to support itself; and when at last it ventured outside, it remained for a long while religious in intent.

Because anthology dramas were shot in New York City, they were able to draw on a vast amount of theatrical talent.
As a result, many of the anthology dramas were the most artistically creative shows on television.
As Marc and Thompson indicate, the backbone of the anthology drama was its writing.

Studio One   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Studio One provides an emblematic continuity for the 1950s drama: it was the longest running drama anthology series, lasting ten years from 1948-58, from the "big freeze" through the "golden age" to the made-in-Hollywood 90-minute film format: in all over 500 plays were produced.
Most other anthologies of the period used a static three camera live studio set up, where two cameras were used for close-ups and the other for the two-shots.
Whilst this would be relatively simple to achieve on film, for live drama it involved complex methods of panning and camera movement to capture and expand the chronicity of events and repeat them exactly as it had gone before.

Drama Genre @ Script Analysis with Anatoly Website
In drama, in contrast to narrative, characters typically talk to one another and the entire plot is carried by and conveyed through their verbal interactions.
There is no single authoritative statement of the classification of genres or kinds, but the epic, the drama and the lyric are supposed to be the principal ones, and there are several subdivisions, such as (for the drama) tragedy, comedy, tragicomedy, farce, historical drama, social drama, melodrama, mystery plays, moralities, etc. etc.
At the end the overall message (Idea) of drama is different from tragedy or comedy (the law of genre).

Each play is accompanied by a brief biography of the playwright and a short introduction to the play and concludes with a selection of critical readings drawn from the period, essays on performance, and a contemporary theater review of one play in that unit.
The anthology includes many of the classics, and where it proves itself especially useful is in its inclusion of sociopolotical plays such as "Information for Foreigners" and "Los Vendidos", contemporary rewrites such as "Hamletmachine" and the clever pairing of the classic "Tempest" with the lesser known searing colonization commentary "A Tempest" by Cesaire.

On the new Norton Anthology and medieval drama
When the “Second Shepherd’s Play” and “Noah” were the representatives of cycle drama, it made it seem as if it were all slapstick and failed to demonstrate that the vast majority of plays in the cycles are about the trials, passion, and resurrection of Christ, or that there’s a plethora of tones and moods.
And actually, my biggest objection to it as *the* example of medieval morality drama is that actually is not very typical of medieval morality drama at all, especially not English morality plays.
