Albanese, which was born in Sydney, studied economic science at the University of Sydney.
Afterwards Albanese to 1995 was vice-Secretary-General of the party in new South Wales.

Albanese said he got involved in running the pharmacy after the death in 1998 of his father, John Albanese Sr., who owned Cameron's and was a pharmacist there.
