Anthony William Durnford was born on 24th May, 1830, in Manor Hamilton, County Leitram, Ireland.
In April, 1847, whilst Anthony was receiving his martial education, his father, who had achieved the rank of captain, was serving as the Executive Engineer in a maritime and land expedition, under the command of Admiral Inglefield and General D'Aguilar, up the Canton River in China.
Durnford was apparently intent on joining "Chinese" Gordon, and in the latter part of 1864 he sailed for the Orient.

Brevet Colonel Anthony Durnford (Ireland 24 May 1830-Isandlwana 22 January 1879)was an officer during the Anglo-Zulu War, and is mainly known for his presence at the defeat of the British army by the Zulu at the Battle of Isandlwana.
A Royal Engineer, Durnford was superior in rank to Brevet Lt-Col Pulleine, who had been left in nominal control of the camp at Isandlwana.
Durnford was killed during the battle, and was later criticised for taking men out of the camp thus weakening its defence.

Durnford himself was dissatisfied with the proceedings of the court of inquiry which excluded from the hearing any Imperial officer or soldier on the grounds that the inquiry was 'a pure volunteer (Carbineer) question'.

This put the issue of command to the fore because Durnford was senior and by tradition would have assumed command.

Durnford, commanding a mounted column, was ordered to Isandlwana to reinforce the troops left in camp there.

CAPTAIN GEORGE [ANTHONY] DURNFORD (later Colonel, and an uncle of Anthony William Durnford of Anglo-Zulu War fame) was in command of a company of the 27th Foot which went to the assistance of the British garrison besieged by rebellious Dutch trekboers at Port Natal in June 1842.
She therefore gave covering fire while the Conch, her decks and hold laden with Durnford's men and also towing boatloads of the other troops from the Southampton, sailed under heavy fire from enemy guns, over the Bar and into the Bay.
The Conch was soon anchored, and the men disembarked and went into action, successfully raising the siege, releasing the garrison, and causing the enemy to withdraw inland.
