Anthony Francis Lucas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Anthony Francis Lucas (September 9, 1855–September 2, 1921) was responsible for the first successful oil well at the Spindletop oil field in Southeast Texas, which made Beaumont, Texas one of the first oil boomtowns.
Lucas was born Antun Lučić to the family of shipbuilder and shipowner, Stjepan Lučić, in the city of Split (Croatia), then part of the Habsburg monarchy.
In 1899, Lucas became drilling contractor and leased the land south of Beaumont, Texas from the oil explorer Pattillo Higgins.

Handbook of Texas Online: HIGGINS, PATTILLO
One of the conditions of the agreement between Lucas and his new financial backers was that Pattillo Higgins was to have no interest in the venture.
Higgins sued Lucas and Gladys City Oil, Gas and Manufacturing Company for royalties after the gusher, arguing that Lucas's second lease was invalid since it was executed before the expiration of the first lease.
With the assistance of Higgins, Lucas negotiated a lease on June 20, 1899, with Gladys City to drill on Spindletop.

LIBERTAS » Star Wars Episode III: Review + Extended Commentary
Lucas has, of course, already garnered support from the important American critics (Time, Newsweek, Variety, Hollywood Reporter and a host of others have raved about the film), and now appears to be courting the worldwide media as the film is prepared for its global debut.
Lucas’ films were perceived by many of us in the late 70’s and early 80’s to be nostalgic throwbacks to another era - an era of more clearly defined morality, of old-fashioned adventure and romance, and of boundless imagination.
Lucas has always been a committed liberal, and he originally intended the ‘Star Wars’ series to be a parable for America’s war in Vietnam - with America serving as the evil, hyper-technological Empire, and the ‘primitive’ Vietnamese as the Rebel Alliance.
