  Anthony Gilbert (author) Summary
Anthony Gilbert is the best-known pseudonym of Lucy Beatrice Malleson, who wrote twenty-four books as Anne Meredith, two books as J. Kilmeny Keith, four as Sylvia Denys Hooke, and two as Lucy Egerton.
As Anthony Gilbert she wrote more than sixty crime novels, most of them featuring Arthur Crook, a coarse but lovable lawyer with a particular concern for the weak and helpless, who spends more time detecting than practicing law.
When the publishing company Collins accepted the first Anthony Gilbert novel, a publicity photo of Malleson in a wig and with a moustache was made; but the photograph was not used, and her identity was kept secret for many years.

 Anthony Gilbert
For many years Gilbert's identity was kept secret, and most readers assumed that the author was a man. Distinctive for Gilbert's novels is skillful plotting, lively supporting characters, entertaining dialogue, and clever action without exaggerating violence.
She wrote straight fiction - mostly with a Victorian flavor - under the pseudonym of Anne Meredith.
Also the short story 'Fifty Years After', written under the name of Anthony Gilbert, dealt with the theme.

THE GRANDEST GAME IN THE WORLD
To paraphrase Carr, the essence of the game is in the pitting of the author’s intellect against a quick-witted reader, the concealment of clues and the effective surprise at the end (whether it be the murderer’s identity, an unusual motive or a novel murder method).
These are the bare bones of the detective story, and much can be done with them.
