	Tony Miles - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		Anthony John Miles (* April 23, 1955 in Edgbaston, Birmingham; † November 12, 2001 in Harborne, Birmingham) was an English chess Grandmaster.
		Miles was born in Edgbaston in Birmingham, and he learned the game of chess at an early age.
		Miles suffered from diabetes, and a post mortem found that this contributed to his death by heart failure in 2001.

		Miles spearheaded a new generation of young English players whose rise led eventually to Nigel Short's march to the World Championship final in 1993 and England's status in the 1980s as the second chess nation behind the Russians.
		Miles was determined to succeed and next year he travelled to Manila where Florencio Campomanes was staging the World Junior and came back with the gold medal.
		Miles inspired us because he showed that the Soviets were not invincible, he was never afraid, rarely took draws and often played more moves than anyone else in a tournament and scored many a win due to his sheer determination.

		Miles went on to become one of the most colourful and controversial leading Grandmasters in the World for the next ten years and was still a formidable opponent and very active player up to his death at the tragically early age of 46.

		A few jazz fans I know did not like this period when he "went off into the deep end", but I believe this to be his greatest work, as it brought many people into the jazz world that were not there before.
