Anthony Payne - Biography   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-08)
Born in London in 1936, Anthony Payne began to compose whilst still at school and went on to read music at Durham University.
On leaving University he went through a period of creative uncertainty and began a career as a freelance musicologist, journalist and lecturer, producing such distinguished publications as authoritative studies of Schoenberg and Bridge.
Payne's command of large orchestral forces is only one aspect of his rich talent: his chamber works - especially A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A MAYFLY which he composed for The Fires of London Ensemble - are more frequently performed in his own country and abroad than is generally the fate of contemporary music.

SIR EDWARD ELGAR, Symphony No. 3: Elaboration by Anthony Payne: A Discussion
Payne is a British composer born in 1936, shortly after Elgar died.
However, Payne eventually came to the conclusion that the existing sketches could be made to fit into an overall structure for the symphony, which was fairly apparent.
Payne was given the permission to finish his work on the sketches, and his "elaboration" was premiered by the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Sir Andrew Davis in 1997.

Payne and Gator did manage to make a little bit of history during the championship reign, being the longest reigning tag team champions a record that has since not even been close to being broken.
Payne successfully retained his title and this would be the final meeting between Payne and Price, closing the final chapter of the Championship Wrestling Federation's "Feud of the Year".
Payne and Hurt would win those titles in no time but their first opponents would be a shocker.

Classical Net Review - Elgar - Symphony #3
Composer Anthony Payne had been interested in these manuscripts for more than 20 years when the BBC asked him, in 1993, to attempt putting them together for a workshop performance.
However, Payne and Elgar deserve equal credit for the work; even Mahler's Tenth Symphony was a much more complete work at the time of the composer's death, and look how the reconstructions of that work differ from one version to the next.
Payne is not a mind-reader, and neither is he, I believe, a composer in Elgar's rank.

INKPOT#99 CLASSICAL MUSIC REVIEWS: ELGAR Symphony No.3 (elab.Payne). Bournemouth SO/Daniels (Naxos)
In 1972, Payne began examining the sketches of the symphony that had been published in W.H. Reed's Book Elgar As I Knew Him (ironically, a book that Shaw encouraged Reed to write after Elgar's death), and was impressed with the vitality and force of the music.
At that time, Payne says, contemplating the sketches, and what Elgar would perhaps have done with them, were no more than an intermittent hobby; years at a time would pass without his glancing at them.
Accordingly, Payne recorded a talk for the BBC in March 1995, which was later released on compact disc as an attachment to BBC Music magazine.

Elgar - His Music : Symphony No 3
Payne first came across the sketches in the early 1970s and worked on the jigsaw puzzle fitfully over the next twenty years or so, attempting to arrange the collection of unordered sketches into something approaching a coherent whole.
Clearly this cannot be the definitive work that Elgar would have written, but Payne claims that, by careful scrutiny of the sketches and interpretation of Reed's remarks, he has managed to complete the symphony with the structure Elgar had intended and with a minimum of invention.
A recording of the work by the same orchestra plus an extended talk by Payne on his work in completing the symphony, was issued on two separate CDs on the same day.

The composer's posthumous thoughts, or what remains of them, are housed in the British Museum where they were catalogued with, according to Payne, a "shocking disregard" for their logical order and sequence.
As work progressed on the Third Symphony, Payne stumbled across Elgar's initial idea for the oratorio and was able to trace the conception as it developed in his mind from initial inception around 1915, virtually until his final illness.
It's difficult to overestimate Payne's achievement in realizing this work so idiomatically, and in particular in divining Elgar's radical intentions regarding both orchestration (the ensemble consists only of 46 violins which play in unison throughout) and especially tempo (andante moderato in 4/4 save for a single fermata on the closing middle-C).

Payne also imported some ideas that Elgar had used in a previous work.
As many people have noticed, it is extremely difficult when just listening to the "elaboration" to tell which is which, due to Payne's great skill as an imitator of Elgar's style of writing.
