Boston.com / A&E / Music / Guitarist enjoys big break, however long it lasts
For Anthony Rossomando, this fantastic journey has been his life for more than a year now.
Best known in these parts for his frenetic playing in the Damn Personals, Rossomando was living the life of a local guitar hotshot, working odd jobs and playing clubs around town.
A former jazz composition and music education major at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Rossomando, 26, had abandoned the trumpet to focus on guitar during his freshman year and spent hours locked in his dormitory room practicing and teaching himself.

Libertines give quick lesson in funk punk - The Washington Times: Entertainment - October 21, 2004   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Anthony Rossomando, a guitarist from Boston, is his better-behaved understudy.
Rossomando intertwined guitar parts that were trickier than they sounded, and Gary Powell, the band's muscular, Seal-look-alike drummer, played with more funk and groove than is typical of punk-rock bands.
Tune-wise, the Libertines play in the style of the Kinks ("Narcissist" has "You Really Got Me" written all over it) and the Buzzcocks — lean and mean, but pink in the middle.

Doherty pulled himself together enough to make a second, and oft brilliant, album, "The Libertines." He also wrote a song called "Can't Stand Me Now." Then, at the end of June, he got booted from the group, and Anthony Rossomando, from Boston, got the call to fill in.
He'd done so before on the Libertines' 2003 US tour (the band need a Yank singer, pronto) and, as it turned out, they needed one for this fall tour, too.
(Rossomando had been singing in the Boston band the Damn Personals and painting houses in Malden.) He is a Libertine, however, for what he calls "this cycle of playing." Whatever comes tomorrow, who knows?

It was the first time in a long time we'd seen the no shirt move, and it was even more surprising considering the skinny, pale, and affected cliché that follows bands with haircuts such as theirs.
Whipping his guitar around to face Powell, ripping in and out of songs and adding a gritty churn onto Rossomando's already dirty power chording, Barat was a one-man army of focused rock energy.

What they got instead was a set that flitted between the Libertines' trademark ramshackle Britrock'n'roll and American post-punk hardcore, with new American guitarist Anthony Rossomando stylishly flailing his way through precision chords and solos like a youthful Joey Santiago.
Rossomando's presence allowed Carl Barat an undisputed role as front man, though the singer's reluctance to engage the audience surely represents a lost opportunity in that regard.
As when I saw the group at Bowery Ballroom, my initial cynicism about the Libertines' originality was gradually worn down by their onstage sense of purpose – especially the power of drummer Gary Powell, who seemed thrilled by the addition of the skillful Rossomando.

A huge banner behind the stage depicted four riot police officers holding shields, and the imagery is apt for the band's cacophonous sound: a mix of snarling guitar leads, ferocious drumming and slurred vocals, all at a barely tolerable volume.
