The Big Interview: Sir Antony Sher | Official London Theatre Guide
The lead role of Tsafendas was never one that Sher wanted or intended to play, “We were all resolved that I shouldn’t play the part”, but it was a role that Sher could identify with.
But, where historical plays are concerned, Sher has a wealth of experience on which to draw and a mentor who wasn’t too bad in his day.
He is also now officially known as Sir Antony Sher KBE: he was knighted in 2000 for his contribution to the arts as an actor and a writer.

Antony Sher - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sir Antony Sher (born June 14, 1949) is an actor and novelist.
He has a South African background, being born into a Lithuanian-Jewish family in Cape Town (his uncle is Ronald Harwood); but has worked mainly in the United Kingdom.
Despite his success, a shy and insecure Sher turned to cocaine as an antidote and by 1996 spent three weeks in rehabilitation.

Primo   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-20)
It's neither to be missed nor taken lightly: this powerful evocation of life and survival in the most horrific of circumstances is harrowing, affecting drama and, as well, a deeply significant human experience.
Sher acts here not just as performer but as citizen of the world, putting before his audience a visceral document of not just The Holocaust but all of them—all the acts of terror and injustice and intolerance that somehow are permitted by so-called civilized people on our planet.
Actor Antony Sher adapted Levi's memoir into this dense, compact, one-man play, creating scenes and vignettes out of excerpts from the book that together tell a story that demands to be told and must never never be forgotten.

London theatre guide whats on Anthony Sher in Mahler's Conversion on stage in London's West End Aldwych theatre - ...
Mahler is admired for his moving settings of German poetry and his ten epic symphonies which combine soaring melodieswith harmonically advanced, sometimes grotesque parodies of waltzes and folk dances.
Cast: Sir Anthony Sher stars as 'Gustav Mahler' with Gary Waldhorn and Nickolas Grace along with Anna Francolini, Fiona Glascott and Alexandra Mathie.
Sir Anthony Sher's most recent London theatre credits include the title role in Macbeth (Young Vic Theatre April 2000 to June 2000, also telecast) and 'Leontes' in The Winter's Tale (Barbican Theatre April 1999 to May 1999) both for the Royal Shakespeare Company

 Stage Directions® magazine
As Primo Levi, Sher is a lesson in scientific detachment and civilized restraint.
Reciting the thoughts of the intensely cerebral and mathematically logical Levi, Sher is able to convey the late writer’s mix of bewilderment and reticent horror at the madness reeling around him, whether it be the cruelly dehumanizing selection process or the survivalist imperative of holding onto your shoes at all costs.
Unfortunately, he can’t transcend nor dissemble the literary roots of the source material, because it was never transposed to meet the demands of a live theater performance.

That fabled performance (which found Sher zipping around in a fl costume on fl-painted crutches) has been described as generating the energy of a “bottled spider”.
My point in reciting these credits is that almost all Sher’s performances have been great and—except for Stanley and the paltry list of movie and TV appearances—none have been seen in New York.
My favorite is Sher depicting himself as a tiny Richard III cowering before the overwhelming image of Laurence Olivier in the same role.

London Theatre Guide Review I.D Anthony Sher Almeida 2003
Antony Sher’s first play “I.D.” which is receiving its world premiere at the Almeida theatre is a rich, intense, powerful play that scrutinises the former South African apartheid system and reveals the perverse moral madness it represented.
Demetrios appears to imply that under apartheid it is the bastards that are legitimate and the white supremacists that are illegitimate.
I thought it rather egotistical of Antony Sher to act the leading role in his own script, and may be it is, but egotistical or not, Sher gives a brilliant performance.

Of the bunch, only Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli (Anthony Sher) is able to capitalize on the duo's cozy-but-not-too-cozy relationship to curry favor.
And even though the material runs out of steam in places (at times things seem as suffocating and dull as life in the royal residence), screenwriter Jeremy Brock's script is witty enough.
Brown" is rated PG for a few scattered profanities, violence, male nudity during a brief skinnydipping scene and a couple of mildly vulgar references.

And, Sher has spoken in interviews about the (very loose) parallels he drew on between Levi’s experience and the treatment of fl South Africans that Sher witnessed growing up during the Apartheid era.

Primo recounts Levi's journey by cattle truck to Auschwitz, his initial harrowing days in the infamous death camp and continues through the first desperate winter, the forging of friendships, routine of daily life and the regular and barbaric process of 'selections' that determined who would live and who would die.

In the wake of such barbarism, it is good that the playgoers of New York should be brought face to face with the ultimate act of savagery and invited to contemplate its terrible implications.
That Sir Anthony should have staged this encounter with evil so artfully is under the circumstances a mere bonus.
Resounding in my ears as I left the theater were the climactic words in which Levi described the Russian soldiers who liberated Auschwitz: "They seem overwhelmed, not just by compassion but something else, something that seals their lips and keeps their eyes fixed to the scene around them.
