  EH.Net Encyclopedia: Historical Anthropometrics
While most historical anthropometric studies published in the U.S. during the early and mid-1980s were either outgrowths of the NBER project or were conducted by students of Robert Fogel, such as Richard Steckel and John Komlos, mortality trends were no longer the sole focus of historical anthropometrics.
Anthropometric statistics were used to analyze the effect of industrialization on the populations experiencing it, as well as the characteristics of slavery in the United States.
Anthropometric history now has its own journal, as John Komlos, who has literally established a center for historical anthropometrics in Munich, created Economics and Biology, “devoted to the exploration of the effect of socio-economic processes on human beings as biological organisms.” Early issues highlight the wide geographic, temporal, and conceptual range of historical anthropometric studies.

Anthropometry - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Anthropometrics was first used in the 19th and early 20th century in criminalistics, to identifying criminals by facial characteristics.
Anthropometric approaches to these types of problems became abandoned in the years after the Holocaust in Nazi Germany, who also famously relied on anthropometric measurements to distinguish "Aryans" from Jews.
For instance, John Relethford's studies of early twentieth-century anthropometric data from Ireland show that the geographical patterning of body proportions still exhibits traces of the invasions by the English and Norse centuries ago.

 Human Variance Anthropometrics
The study of Anthropometrics (human measurement) is concerned with the physical sizes and shapes of humans.
Accurate data on height, weight, limb, and body segment sizes are needed to design items ranging from clothing, furniture, automobiles, buses, and subway cars to space shuttles and space stations.
Anthropometrics enables us to properly size items, including system interfaces, to "fit" the user.

This study investigated the accuracy and reliability of seven prosthetic anthropometric measurement devices as used by a group of eight prosthetic-orthotic practitioners and a group of five prosthetic-orthotic students to measure six common anthropometric dimensions on three foam positive models of transtibial amputee residual limbs.
The following common anthropometric measurements were assessed: residual-limb length (from mid-patellar tendon [MPT] to distal end), anterior-posterior (AP) distance at MPT, medial-lateral (ML) distance at mid-patella, and circumference at MPT and at 2 in.
Anthropometric measurement is an important part of clinical practice in prosthetics and orthotics, and the accuracy and consistency of such measurement may become more important as the need for outcomes and evidence-based practice grows.

Anthropometrics is the study of quantitative measurement of human variation.
For example, three of the most commonly used anthropometric indicators for infants and children-weight-for-height, height-for-age, and weight-for-age--can be constructed by comparing indicators based on weight, height, age, and gender with reference data for "healthy" children.
Anthropometrics is also used extensively in the US for monitoring nutritional status of certain groups of people such as those with HIV AIDS.
