Anti-Monopoly - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Anti-Monopoly is a board game made by San Francisco State University Professor Ralph Anspach, in response to Monopoly.
A similar game (in that it inverts the objective of Monopoly, but with the aim of giving away money and property) was described/invented by science fiction author, Philip K. Dick.
In the original 1974 version the board is "monopolized" at the beginning of the game, and players compete to return the state of the board to a free market system.

Jeffersonian Perspective: Anti-Trust and Equal Rights
The blanket prohibition of monopolies is more problematic, because it introduces the problem of defining a monopoly, and it ignores the social benefit that occurs when a monopoly comes about naturally, simply out of outstanding excellence in a field.
"The saying there shall be no monopolies lessens the incitements to ingenuity, which is spurred on by the hope of a monopoly for a limited time, as of fourteen years; but the benefit of even limited monopolies is too doubtful to be opposed to that of their general suppression." --Thomas Jefferson to James Madison, 1788.
So, defense becomes a game in which the defender defines monopoly broadly enough to escape the provisions of the law.

 Anti-Monopoly
Their simple story begins with Anspach's invention of a game entitled "Anti-Monopoly" and its prankish antithesis to the Monopoly game.
Monopoly soon became the most widely purchased and played board game of all time other than chess and checkers, earned more than a billion dollars for Parker Brothers, and made Darrow a millionaire.
One of the most ironic aspects of the Monopoly game story is the role acquired by the American mass media in perpetuating the false version of it.

 Anti-Monopoly
Appropriately, he named it Anti-Monopoly after being assured by lawyers that this title was not an infringement of the Monopoly trademark because the "anti" added to "monopoly" would prevent confusion between Anti-Monopoly and Monopoly.
Its resolve hardened when Anspach's investigations revealed that the people who were accusing Anti-Monopoly of infringement of their rights were involved in the theft of the Monopoly game from its inventors and the public domain.
He also discovered that the perpetrators of the scheme had fabricated a bogus story about the origins of Monopoly to cover up their doings and that the American public was then duped into elevating the bogus history into a famous American legend.

Still, Anspach is shying away from actually using the full word "Monopoly" in the main title of the Original-opoly game, because Parker Brothers claims that it still has a trademark on the single-word name "Monopoly".
Just as chess or checkers are in the public domain, the monopoly game (lower-case "m", as the Quakers insisted) has become largely public domain, but only through Anspach's court battles.
In fact, Anspach plans next year to start releasing the game "Original-opoly," an exact replica of the original monopoly game played by Quakers and socialists early this century (there are still some game boards left from the era).
