Imperialism and Anti-authoritarian Resistence after 9-11
It was, I think, clear from the beginning, that the US “War on Terror” marked a rapid acceleration of a process which is functioning to create a new imperial regime in Central Asia, one built on a model currently in place across the Middle East.
Two, these states will be kept dependent on the US through a process of militarizing their relations to their people.
Thus, any group with a progressive or liberal agenda of any sort is finding itself less and less able to play a role in the political development of the region while power splits into a horrifying binary opposition of authoritarian clients of US imperialism, and fundamentalism.

ANTI-AUTHORITARIANISM: AN INDICATOR OF PATHOLOGY   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
This evidence is held to support Rudin's argument that rational and irrational authoritarianism (as exemplified by the F-scale) are independent, and that pathology is related to rejection of the former as well as acceptance of the latter.
The descriptions of the authoritarian personality which were developed by Adorno, Frenkel-Brunswik, Levinson and Sanford in their 1950 report of the research arising out of studies of ethnocentrism, anti-semitism and conservatism carried strong evaluative suggestions concerning those who scored highly on the F-Scale (Potentiality for Fascism).
The entitlement of the Rudin negative scale to the description of "rational authoritarianism" therefore seems to rest on some empirical foundation, apart from the purely conceptual argument that it cannot be rational to reject all authority.

 Libertarian Socialism
Libertarian Socialism recognizes that the concept of "property" (specifically, the means of production, factories, land used for profit, rented space) is theft and that in a truly libertarian society, the individual would be free of exploitation caused by the concentration of all means of wealth-making into the hands of an elite minority of capitalists.
It is recognized that there are authoritarian systems and behavior, distinct from libertarian, or non-authoritarian ones.
Since capitalism's early beginnings in Europe, and it's authoritarian trend of wage-slavery for the majority of people (working class) by a smaller, elite group (a ruling, or, capitalist class) who own the "means of production": machines, land, factories, there was a liberatory movement in response to capitalism known as "Socialism".

Power Line: One man's anti-authoritarian is another man's misfit
This George Will column ridicules a piece by four professors who claim that conservatism is symptomatic of a psychological syndrome that can involve fear, aggression, uncertainty avoidance, intolerance of ambiguity, dogmatic dislike of equality, irrational nostalgia, and need for cognitive closure, all aspects of the authoritarian personality.
Liberal Democrats, by contrast, tend to regard rules as tools of oppression that can freely be disregarded whenever it is in their interest to do so.
The time-worn argument that conservatives have authoritarian personalities is, more or less, a nasty way of recasting my thesis.

The specific kind of anarchism we talk about and promote is the anarchism of the Haymarket martyrs and those expelled by Karl Marx from the First International for criticizing his authoritarianism and the elitist, vanguardist degradation of the masses of the working class...
We do not support the kind of anarchism proposed by some pseudo-modernists and pseudo-"revolutionaries" who regard symbolic activity as substitute to mass struggle, or the kind of anarchism of "humanists" who hold other tasks as equal or more important than the revolutionary struggle for abolishing the capitalist system.

For me the case is not primarily strategic, since I'm far more in inherent sympathy with the left's economic and cultural concerns than most libertarians are (and part of the point our panel were making in Boston is that libertarians have done too little justice to such concerns); but it certainly is at least strategic.
While there are, admittedly, plenty of authoritarian types on the left (as everywhere else), there are also plenty of people whose instincts are firmly anti-authoritarian but who have been lured into supporting state socialism because it's been sold to them as the only effective counterweight to state capitalism.
These leftists are our potential allies, but no alliance will be forthcoming so long as we continue to confirm most leftists' impression of libertarianism as a variant of conservatism.

One Anti-authoritarian, Anti-capitalist’s take on the EU
As expected the corporate media stateside has put its own authoritarian capitalist spin on the story.
They are accusing the opposition everything from “plunging the country [France] into political disarray and jeopardizing the cause of European unity” (NY Times), being anti-immigrant(The Guardian and The Washington Post), stalling “efforts to develop common foreign policies and push the euro, a potent symbol of unification, into a downward spiral” (NY Times again).

To assume that infoshops and newer and better versions of love and rage can get the goods ("revolution") seems to me to be terribly naive.
I am not a vanguardist or a fan of authoritarian organizations, but some serious thinking needs to be done about how the goal of a "prefigurative politics" can be reconciled with the goal of revolution, given the opposition of very powerful and well-organized groups to both of these things, and this is not it.
