 Clericalism - tScholars.com
Therefore the debate over clericalism and anti-clericalism is often really a debate over how and by whom the church should be lead and directed.
In a pejorative manner, "clericalism" is often used to denote an ecclesiolatry approach to issues beyond the church by either clergy or their supporters while the term has also been applied in a pejorative manner to describe the cronyism and cloistered political environs of the Church—mainly in reference to the Roman Catholic Church.
Clericalism is the application of the formal, church-based, leadership or opinion of ordained clergy in matters of either the church or broader political and sociocultural import.

 Clericalism and Anti-Clericalism
Simply defined, "clericalism" is a kind of elitist classism in which the church equals its clergy, and "anti-clericalism" is any reaction to that wrong-headed assumption.
One of the more vexing aspects of the church's contemporary life is the festering and twinned evils of clericalism and anti-clericalism.
The worldview of clericalism is in direct distinction to the worldview of contemporary culture.

Clericalism cannot be killed in a capitalist society.
The supply of the cheapest and the quietest workers was taken away from the middle class and was available for the use of their clerical competitors.
It is a serious error to urge the workers to fight the Clericals rather than the capitalists, and it will retard the complete triumph of the proletariat.

Political spectrum - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This axis is not significant in the United States where views of the role of religion tend to get subsumed into the general left-right axis, but in Europe clericalism versus anti-clericalism is much less correlated with the left-right spectrum.
Those who believe clerics should have the power to enforce Islamic law are on one end of the spectrum, those who support a secular society are on the other; moderates fall at various points in between.
In Iran, for instance, a political spectrum might be divided along the issue of the clergy's role in government.

Clericalism and Socialism by Enrico Ferri 1902
Socialism being also a political party which defends working men and labours for their freedom, must also be anti-Clerical, because Clericalism, with its spirit of resignation, is “the fatty degeneration of religion” used as the ally of capitalist supremacy.
In Italy, where anti-Clericalism derives its strength from national sentiment – for the Catholic Church is opposed to national unity – the middle-classes have, after an anti-Clerical propaganda of a hundred years, achieved hardly anything.
But it is easy to show, when a strike occurs to peasants and workers, the social meaning of Clericalism, when it is seen that the priests are always on the side of the capitalists.

That was the fight to defeat clericalism and to make a triumph for the freedom of conscience.
For us, the heart of the problem is not to limit ourselves to equal right for secularists, atheists and free thinkers and for believers and that our associations were granted the same rights and the same privileges as the churches.

It was seventy-five years before the struggle against the emperor ended, and although the fight against simony and clerical immorality, as well as the effort to restore the ancient ascetic habit of clerical celibacy, never slackened, it was inevitable that the major contest should absorb the greater part of the energies of the various popes.
Clerical ignorance, lay brutality and superstition were still, in the time of St. Bernard and Alexander III, only too common.
The leaders were men of holy life, monks for the most part, shocked to see the general neglect of the most elementary precepts of the Gospel, their hearts lacerated at the spiritual peril that endangered souls.

 AKMA’s Random Thoughts: Executive Summary
One consequence of our anti-clericalism, however, has been an inclination to obscure the authority of a clergy leader whose understanding and abilities warrant acknowledging her leadership.
Maybe this is what I was trying to say Sunday: in the Episcopal Church, we had a long, lamentable tradition of clericalism, whereby people were expected to kowtow to clergy regardless of the ordained person’s capacities, simply because he [then] was ordained.
The idea isn’t “clericalism” or “lay leadership,” but “leadership by people who know what they’re doing.”

Clearly we have "a man of faith, who is (in the traditional sense) immoral." But it is distressing when, in the movie, the Christian camp is comprised of mostly caricaturized clerics -- of the arrogant or cowardly variety -- and war-mongering brutes drunk with ambition, bloodlust and religious fervor.
This is not to deny that Christians' actions often fell grievously short of Gospel ideals.
And the few "enlightened" Christian characters -- including Balian, the peace-loving Baldwin and Tiberias -- seem less motivated by firm faith, than by a vague humanism.

Anti-clericalism has always existed within the Church and is probably inevitable in any institution that draws on diverse sources of authority.
Through long tradition, the Church exalts its hierarchical structure and its clerical institutions, yet the deeply radical and egalitarian picture offered by the gospels often seems to clash with these institutional values.
The two value systems can be reconciled, and usually have been -- Francis of Assisi never ceased to be a devoted son of the Church -- but the potential for conflict is always present.

History in Focus: Empire Review Article on "Promoting the Colonial Idea"
Indeed, anti-clericalism does not make it to the index, even though France was durably split into Catholic and dechristianised zones by the French Revolution, along fault lines that still count in French politics.
Chafer and Sackur note the role of the colonial project in healing rifts between republicans and monarchists, which came close to destroying the Third Republic in its first decades, but they say nothing about the even more divisive issue of clericalism and anti-clericalism.
The authors also fail to discuss arguments that French racism owed more to Lamarck than to Darwin, and thus allowed for a greater degree of 'upward racial mobility'.
