Anti Essays : : Copyright and Publishing
In sum, copyright owners rely for assurance against unauthorized copying not just on copyright law, but on the aggregate deterrence of all four methods for limiting copying of their works: copyright law, the state of the copying art, special technical devices, and contract law.
If copyright owners insisted, as sometimes they did, that copyright gave them broad rights to control their works in any manner and in all forms, the practical costs of enforcing those rights against individual consumers dissuaded them from testing their claims in court.
Copyright specialists are attending conferences, writing articles and speeches, convening advisory councils, holding public meetings, and caucusing over the Internet about how the information superhighway will, indeed must, be paved with copyright asphalt.

 The Financial Advantages of Anti-copyright
Copyright regulations temper and slow the process of theft, and obfuscate the public perception of product acquisition as being little more than open piracy.
The two key principles for the existence of copyright are to protect one institution from the aggression of another, and to maintain exclusive control over a product so that the highest amount of profit that the market will bear can be obtained.
Slowing the process down with copyright is counterproductive, both in terms of individual compensation as well as in terms of resistant cultural production.

Nihilist theories deny that copyright is justified, or deny that justification has anything to do with understanding copyright laws, which are simply the results of socio-political processes.
But there are other philosophical questions which arise from copyright, such as determining when one work is "derived" from another, or deciding when information has been placed in a "tangible" or "material" form.
The foremost of these is the study of "justifications" for the existence of copyright laws.

 Slashdot Lessig Spins Copyright Law
Copyright laws are made to prevent others from publishing copyrighted material and making $$ off that copyrighted material, i.e., it's to prevent the sale of a creative work in which none of that $$ goes to the creator of that work.
The major issue with copyright is that instead of defining a principle (an author has the exclusive artistical and revenue rights from the produced works) it just edicts one possible *technical* (hence the word "copy" in "copyright") way to enforce the intents.
The current copyright applies not only to the content (as it should; especially since copyright is supposed to promote advancement in arts), but also the format (which should be protected by patents, not copyright).
