Psychiatry - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Unlike most other areas of medicine, there is an anti-psychiatry movement opposed to the practices of, and in some cases the existence of, psychiatry.
Psychiatry is one of the clinical medical disciplines which involve the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental and behavioral disorders such as clinical depression, schizophrenia and anxiety disorders.
Psychiatry is the branch of medicine that studies, diagnoses and treats mental illness and behavioral disorders.

Anti-psychiatry - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In its most general sense, anti-psychiatry refers to approaches (sometimes seen as a coherent movement) which fundamentally challenge the theory or practice of psychiatry (the application of the medical method to problematic emotions, thoughts or behaviors).
Psychiatry has been and is at the forefront of the practice of basing mental health care in hospital wards or other medical settings, and using legally-sanctioned force to admit individuals against their will.
Common criticisms include that: psychiatry assumes medical concepts and tools that are not always appropriate; is too dominant compared to other approaches; has too many financial and professional links with pharmaceutical companies; uses a system of categorical diagnosis that is over-simplified and stigmatizing; is experienced by too many of its 'patients' as demeaning and controlling.

 Untitled Document
The anti psychiatry movement developed in the late 50's and 60's and was critical of the theories and the therapeutic treatments of conventional psychiatry, particularly the use of drugs and Electro Convulsive Therapy (ECT or shock treatment) and involuntary hospitalisation.
Anti- psychiatry claimed that illness is a physical concept and therefore cannot be applied to psychological disorder without any physical pathology.
Followers of the movement claimed that diagnostic labelling stigmatised those with mental health problems, and they questioned the concepts of 'normal' and 'abnormal; 'sane' and 'insane'; recognising that the problem of mental distres is as often related to social issues as to 'causes' such as genetic defects and chemical imbalances.

 spiked-health Column Breaking psychiatry's chains
Both Laurance and Healy challenge the ascendancy of biological psychiatry from a perspective that emphasises the importance of wider social and cultural influences in both the causation and the treatment of mental illness.
The central problem of psychiatry, Healy concludes, is that 'the majority of people who meet the criteria for a diagnosis of a particular psychiatric disorder cannot be shown to benefit specifically from the available treatments'.
In the late 1990s, social psychiatry, with the support of a growing movement of past and present clients and patients of the mental health system, began to challenge the ascendancy of the biological model.

What has happened to a biopsychological approach in psychiatry
Mainstream psychiatry's attack on anti-psychiatry for its denial of the reality of mental illness has obscured the extent to which some so-called anti-psychiatrists, such as R. Laing, adopted a biopsychological model of mental illness, not dissimilar to the approach of Adolf Meyer.
The dominant tradition of mental illness in psychiatry is of the biomedical model.
Meyer (1951/2) and biomedical psychiatry find different ways of accommodating to two main philosophical issues (i) the mind-body problem and (ii) the application of scientific method to the study of human nature.

Harry Oosterhuis and Saskia Wolters describe the impact on the professional identity of psychiatry in the Netherlands of the increasing separation of psychiatry and neurology, which encouraged a multicausal, bio-psycho-social approach to psychiatry as opposed to the one-sided somatic emphasis of neurology.
The interpersonal psychiatry of J L Cameron, one of the co-authors of the Lancet article on the 'Rumpus Room', had more of an influence on Laing than is generally acknowledged, although Laing did make a distinctive contribution to part of the overall project.

I am against psychiatry because a friend of mine was told that her son could no longer attend school unless he took addictive amphetamines.
I'm against psychiatry because much of their drugs have nasty permanent debilitating side effects such as tardive dyskinesia, and deadly side effects such as significantly increased diabetes risk and neuroleptic malignant syndrome.
I am against psychiatry because there are no objective tests for mental "illnesses", all diagnoses are made subjectively based on the opinions of individual psychiatrists who regularly come to differing conclusions regarding the same patient.

Scientology takes pulpit with anti-psychiatry gospel - The Boston Globe - Boston.com - Nation - News
This was, rather, the latest round in a long-running campaign against psychiatry and the pharmaceutical industry by this expanding Los Angeles-based religion, which has been immersed in controversies over its 51 years of existence.
The church argues that psychiatry ''does not meet any known definition of a science, what with its hodgepodge of unproven theories that have never produced any result." It also considers reliance on psychotropic drugs as dangerous as past treatments such as electric shock or lobotomies.
Scientology and psychiatry offer competing explanations of the source for mental problems and techniques to deal with them.

While criticism of psychiatry is a critical aspect of Scientology's belief structure, the state agency's attorneys concluded the display did not have religious overtones.
The state contends that the group described the exhibition as a "history of psychiatry" in its application.
It features blown-up photographs of what is alleged to be patients being abused, including undergoing electroshock treatment, and charged that psychiatrists have frequently abused their power and subjected patients to unsafe experiments or medical procedures.

 the minnesota review - ns. 55-57 - maria farland - sylvia plath's anti-psychiatry
Plath's critique of psychiatry, like those of her counterparts, entwines a scathing indictment of psychiatry's coercive practices—such as electroshock and lobotomy—with a sophisticated sense of the normalizing tendencies that characterize even the most consensual modes of psychiatric treatment.
Echoing the attacks on psychiatry led by contemporaries such as Szasz, Goffman, and Laing, Plath sought to evoke the repressive tendencies of large centralized institutions, typified by the asylum.
Plath's use of the terms "slave" and "totalitarian" recalls Szasz's invocation of "totalitarian" psychiatry, just as The Bell Jar's emphasis on contractual therapeutic relations recalls Szasz's support for therapeutic approaches grounded in consent rather than in coercion.

David Cooper, an associate of R.D. laing, believes that mainstream psychiatry, preoccupied with the paraphernalia of the natural sciences, has developed techniques that are largely irrelevant to the human situation.
His principal concern has been to develop existential psychiatry in Britain and to elaborate principles to overcome the methodological difficulties and compartmentalization of the human sciences.
He attacks directly and without compromise the depersonalizing 'safeguards' imposed by modern society, and by the attitudes of conventional psychiatry in particular.

Psychological Therapies, Shropshire - From Anti-Psychiatry to Critical Psychology (article)
Psychiatry and clinical psychology are both based on modernist notions of the self, which suggest that individuals can be studied and understood apart from context, culture and history (Gergen, 1999).
This allows both psychiatry and psychology to pay lip service to the social and ideological origins of distress, while ignoring the political implications of this by emphasising theories and interventions that are individualistic in nature.
We would argue that this is because the success of the social institutions of psychiatry and psychology rely on the continuation of inequality and oppression within society, which are supported by the fragmentation and individualisation of modern Western society.

 Antipsychiatry
Anti-psychiatry is part of psychiatry but recognises that objectification of the mentally ill makes psychiatry part of the problem rather than the solution of mental illness (Jones 1997).
In this context renewed criticism of modern psychiatry is needed and it may be important to resurrect "anti-psychiatry" ideas (Double 1992b, 1998).
However, "anti-psychiatry" includes critics with differing views and the essence of its argument has not always been clear (Gijswijt-Hofstra and Porter 1998).

Both psychology and its related discipline psychiatry (whose practitioners are medical doctors with a specialty in mental health) are criticized by a vocal and well-credentialed (if small) minority in medical and academic circles.
These critics call them pseudo-sciences, arguing that their theories, diagnoses and treatments don't hold up under the rigor of the scientific method and that they are not reproducible; others question the appropriateness of applying the scientific method to the study of the human mind and human behavior.
Fields such as neuroscience, political science, media studies and gender studies have also come to be seen as closely related to psychology.

It was the author's belief that such small units might form the optimal therapeutic milieu for the sort of patients we had in mind, as they would allow a greater degree of freedom of movement out of the highly artificial staff and patient roles imposed on people by conventional psychiatry.
But first of all it was necessary to explore the limits of change possible within the large mental hospital, to note the difficulties and contradictions that would arise, and to base future plans on such an assessment.
Thirdly, there was the need to establish a viable prototype for a small autonomous unit which could function in a large house in the community, outside the psychiatric institutional context.

Amazon.com: Toxic Psychiatry : Why Therapy, Empathy and Love Must Replace the Drugs, Electroshock, and Biochemical Theories of the "New Psychiatry": Books: Peter R. Breggin
There is much deception in psychiatry, from seminars sponsored by large corporations which twist psychiatrists perceptions, to free samples given to psychiatrists which twist their prescription habits, to constant and repetitive advertising by pharmaceautical companies which engrains 'depression' and other illnesses in the minds of those who are subjected to these advertisments.
Although I do believe "Toxic Psychiatry" shows a one-sided picture, I believe this does not obscure the point being made; that there is something seriously wrong with psychiatry and how it's methods of treatment are applied.
There's one thing I didn't agree with Breggin about, which is his way of practicing psychiatry, which involves only talk and no medication.
