Anti-tank - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For a time it appeared that the tank was a dead end, a small team of infantry with a few missiles in a well hidden spot could take on a number of the largest and most expensive tanks.
Tanks were also vulnerable to artillery and mortars, especially if they became stuck and they could be targeted more easily.
Small cannon and large-calibre rifles were used against the early World War I tanks being introduced by the British Expeditionary Force (BEF), many of which proved to be almost useless.

Anti-tank dog - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Unfortunately, the Soviets trained the dogs by placing food under their own tanks; consequently, in battle the dogs were as likely to run beneath a friendly tank as they were to attack the enemy.
Also, the dogs were reluctant to run towards an active tank, and as such became a menace to everyone on the battlefield.
In 1942, after dogs forced an entire Soviet tank division into retreat, dog mines were withdrawn from use.

 ANTI-TANK
Although the first 'tank versus tank' engagement occurred during the German's Lys offensive against the British in the spring of 1918, it is often forgotten that in WW2 tanks were not the primary anti-tank weapon.
Anti-tank defences were based on the principle that penetration of defensive localities by enemy tanks was unacceptable, so guns were sited in depth as well as being mutually supporting with the objective of taking a successive toll of attacking tanks.
Defilade usually meant engaging tanks from the side, which presented the largest target and had less armour than the front, the first Pz KfW Mk VI Tigers were destroyed by 6-pdr fire from their flank at ranges between 500 and 900 yards.

 Anti-Tank Rifle, Cannon & Machine Gun, WWII - Inert-Ord.net
Few anticipated the advancements in tank technology during the next 20 short years which resulted in a surprisingly dominate and mobile force on the modern battlefield.
Combined with the fact that tank armor was quickly reaching thickness impenetrable by even these behemoths, the days of an effective anti-tank rifle were over.
It is ironic that forward thinking anti-tank rifle development produced a variety of finely engineered weapons optimized for an outmoded form of warfare.

 Panzerbuchse Anti-Tank Rifle
However, the concept of the Tank Rifle was quite out of date for the tanks of WW II; the unsatisfactory performance of the tank rifles due to the spectacular successes hitherto went hardly noticed until the battle for Moscow in 1941 where the the weapon's proved themselves practically useless against the soviet tanks.
The russian tank rifles PTRD-1941 and PTRS-1941, which were also used by the germans as the PzB 783(r) and PzB 784(r) respectively, used the russian M 41 cartridge that was later improved to the heavy machine gun and tank rifle cartridge M 41/44 14.5 x 114.
When these tank rifles eventually could not be used effectively anymore against the newer, even heavier armored tanks from 1943 on, the weapon was increasingly used to good effect against other targets, such as the lightly armored vehicles that operated together with the tanks, against machine gun nest, sometimes even against bunkers or aircraft.

 Nase noviny - The 17-pounder Anti-Tank Gun
Anti-tank gun development soon showed that by far not everything can be achieved by means of gun design, at one point of increasing the muzzle velocity and the weight of shots and shells it was discovered that the intensity of impact shattered the projectile completely even before it could make any impression on the armour.
A dozen of these guns were also issued to the anti-tank battery of the Czechoslovak Independent Armoured Brigade Group and remained in service in the post-war Czechoslovak army until early 1950's.
Like the 2-pounder, besides being a widely used anti-tank artillery weapon, it was also used as a standard tank gun in Crusader Mk.

The tank contains an anti-vortex baffle and siphon outlet to transmit the liquid hydrogen from the tank through a 17-inch line to the left aft umbilical.
Also, significant portions of the tank are milled differently to reduce thickness, and the weight of the ET's aft solid rocket booster attachments were reduced by using a stronger, yet lighter and less expensive titanium alloy.
The liquid hydrogen tank is an aluminum semimonocoque structure of fusion-welded barrel sections, five major ring frames, and forward and aft ellipsoidal domes.

 Howstuffworks "How Landmines Work"
The development of tanks during World War I led to anti-tank mines, and anti-personnel mines were developed to prevent enemy armies from moving anti-tank mines.
All anti-tank mines are blast mines, because the goal of the anti-tank mine is to destroy the tank's tracks and as much of its body as possible.
Most tanks and other military vehicles apply that kind of pressure.

 Development of Infantry Anti-Tank Weapons - Inert-Ord.Net
From these experiences, most designers were led to the conclusion that an adequate anti-tank weapon, for platoon level infantry, would be a magazine-fed rifle, firing a hard-core high velocity round of approximately 12-14mm caliber.
Since Germany was late to develop tank technology, the Allies never adopted a comparable weapon of their own, but were quick to realize the need to have one as the tank was a certain future threat.
However, tanks were vulnerable to lesser weapons as well, since maximum all around armor protection was not practical, due to weight limitations.

A smile of victory was on the lips of the tank killer - for that is what these anti-tank men were called - as he stated: 'That was my sixth bullseye.'
While effective against the 1930s tanks it was designed to counter, it was - due to its bolt-action design - slow to operate and outclassed by later models such as the PzKpfw III.

It should not be seen as a tank (as the open topped tank destroyers of WWII were) but rather as a highly mobile anti-tank platform whose mission it is to defend light infantry from heavily-armored and mechanized threats.
LOSAT (Line Of Sight, Anti Tank) is a Humvee-based anti-tank missile system.
In testing, the MGM-166 destroyed two M60 tanks at 2,400m, one of which was crossing the LOSAT's line of sight and another that was crossing in front of the LOSAT at close range.

When fired it lurched forwards under the influence of the spring and then recoiled violently when the bomb left the trough.

Tanks invariably end up on railcars in any country with a rail infrastructure, because no army has enough wheeled transporters to carry all its tanks.

Anti tank refers to any method of combating military armored fighting vehicles, notably tanks.
Tanks were also vulnerable to artillery and mortars, especially if they became stuck, which was no miracle at the time with difficult terrain and barbed wire, and they could be targeted more easily.

 Tank - Open Encyclopedia
Since an immobilized tank is an easy target for mortars, artillery, and the specialized tank hunting units of the enemy forces, speed is normally kept to a minimum, and every opportunity is seized upon to move tanks on wheeled tank transporters and on railways instead of under their own power.
Paradoxically, a tank is usually in its safest state when the commander is in a personally unsafe position, riding in the open, head out of the turret, with no personal protection save his helmet and a flak jacket.
Tanks were first used in combat at the Battle of the Somme on September 15 1916.
