Lone Sentry: WWII German AntiTank Weapons (WWII U.S. Intelligence Bulletin, Nov. 1944)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
German antitank weapons are divided into several classes.  The main class comprises guns built specifically for antitank missions and falls into three groups—guns of conventional German design, guns built with tapered-bore tubes, and captured antitank weapons.
Another important class of antitank weapons is composed of the self-propelled antitank guns, or tank destroyers.
Since many antitank guns of obsolete models still are in service, the Germans have introduced the stick bomb, another development of the hollow charge, in an effort to make the most of such equipment.

Lone Sentry: New Hollow-Charge Antitank Grenade for Close Combat (WWII Tactical and Technical Trends, October 1944, WW2 ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Close-combat antitank methods and matériel are strongly emphasized by the German Army as a result of experience on the Eastern front.
The antitank rifle in its original form is entirely obsolete, though an attempt was made to increase its effectiveness by modifying it permanently to launch an antitank hollow-charge grenade.
The German tables of issue for close-combat antitank weapons to various units are heavy, especially in the case of the recoilless antitank grenade with launcher as far down as companies.

The mobile antitank guns of M Battery, 3d RHA, were to the Germans' left, and the 1st RHA was dug in and hull down on the east side of the El Adem road, on the German right flank (see map 8).
The antitank weapons, which are considered artillery by the British, are under the command of the division artillery commander in the British forces, and he is responsible for so placing his artillery and antitank guns that they will be mutually supporting.

Military Medicine: Injuries from Antitank Mines in Southern Croatia
The objective of this retrospective study was to analyze antitank mine casualties in South Croatia during the period from 1991 to 1995.
Antitank mines are designed for the destruction and damage of armored and other vehicles, usually by creating mine-fields on the roads used by tanks.
The war in Croatia had the characteristics of conventional contemporary conflict with the significant use of mine-explosive devices.3-9 The conditions for the application of antitank mines were markedly favorable.10, 11 Antitank mines amount to 20% of the presumed total 2 million land mines laid during the war in Croatia.

Antitank protection is vital to the successful accomplishment of a combat mission; therefore, suitable antitank weapons are provided for each unit.
The antitank units which are organic parts of infantry regiments, battalions, or companies contribute their fire power to the support and protection of their own organizations.
Those antitank units which are organic parts of corps and divisions constitute a reserve force which, because of their mobility, can be rushed to decisive areas as determined by the general situation.

FM 90-10 Appendix B Weapons Effects And Employment
The general employment considerations for antitank weapons contained in organizational How-to-Fight manuals are applicable to offensive and defensive operations or urbanized terrain.
Antitank weapons can be used in this role; none, however, is as effective as heavy direct-fire weapons (tank/artillery) or standard demolitions.
The use of antitank guided missiles (ATGMs) to breach or destroy structural targets or fortifications, although possible, is inefficient because of the high cost and limited availability of missiles.

Soviet Defensive Tactics at Kursk, July 1943
Prewar views on antitank defense mandated the fielding of six to nine antitank guns (a number that proved woefully inadequate in the face of German Army assaults in June 1941) on a front of 1 kilometer integrated into defensive positions to a depth of 3 kilometers.
Antitank defenses matured as the Soviets increasingly integrated antitank strongpoints and regions throughout the entire depth of the defense.
For antitank defense, the division formed nine to twelve antitank strongpoints and antitank regions throughout the depth of its combat formation, which, likewise, increased to from five to eight kilometers.

antitank gun and tank gun are probably the substitution, in the antitank gun, of mechanical firing and percussion primer for electric firing and primer; the chamber of the antitank gun is also probably much longer.
The 75-mm antitank gun is mounted on a split-trail carriage, with torsion springing; this springing is automatically cut out when the trails are open.
While the muzzle velocity is high, the tube is of monobloc construction and the propellant charge is very large; in view of this, the safety factor may be regarded as somewhat doubtful.

 On German Antitank Artillery
The 1930's concept of an antitank gun was a weapon which was light (for mobility), small (for concealibility) and still capable of penetrating the armor of the current generation of tanks.
During the war, antitank guns increased in size relative to the increased size of the tanks it was expected to defeat.
This class of weapon was so successfully developed and deployed that by the end of the war, the large caliber antitank guns lost their former importance as troops relied on these simpler, but very effective weapons.

An antitank regiment is supposed to be able to take on a brigade attack from an unprepared deployment line with a 90% chance of success; a battalion should tackle a battalion attack with similar prospects of repulsing it.
Antitank battalions should be reinforced with howitzers and air defense, at least as they enter battle.
This is also true of all types of unit and formation that are assigned wide sectors in maneuver defense, or even in positional defense, given the greatly increased accuracy and destructiveness of air-delivered and indirect fire, and the consequent rapid loss of combat effectiveness to be expected on sectors where the enemy concentrates his fire.

Standing Fast: German defensive doctrine on the Russian front during world war II
Although antitank rifles would be available in all parts of the German defensive zones, the crew-served antitank guns (Panzerabwehr Kanonen, or Paks) and direct-fire artillery would generally be located to the rear of the main line of resistance.
Although panzers were not considered antitank weapons themselves, the Germans did develop a doctrinal role for their armored forces that exploited the tank's offensive nature and conformed neatly to the Elastic Defense format.
German antitank measures followed the 1918 outlines: enemy tanks would have their accompanying infantry stripped away; their advance would be obstructed by mines and obstacles; and a mixture of direct-fire artillery, antitank gunfire, and individual close assault would destroy those tanks that actually penetrated the German defensive positions.

The deployment of antitank weapons is not in orderly lines, but (presumably) making the best use of cover, and is it designed to produce a layered defense and to achieve surprise.

In emplacing antitank guns, the Germans prefer positions in enfilade or on reverse slopes.
Although single antitank guns sometimes engage enemy tanks at ranges up to 1,000 yards, main antitank defenses usually hold their fire until the range is reduced to about 150 to 300 yards.
Thus the Germans avoid blinding their own antitank gunners, and leading hostile tanks not only are left without adequate support but are silhouetted against the smoke.

FINNISH ARMY 1918 - 1945: ANTITANK GUNS PART II
Antitank training centre started soon training crews for them and the Finns lost couple of these guns in combat already during this first war.
Their structure was also somewhat unique: Wheels of the gun could be removed and front part of gun put on top of a plate-like foot, this gave carriage a three point stand that was both stable and low, making spotting and hitting the gun more difficult for the enemy.
PstK/38 was the first antitank gun in Finnish inventory that was too heavy for few men to effectively push it around, in situations in which gun positions were about to be overrun by Soviet infantry this made taking the gun with the retreating crew quite problematic.

ANTITANK MISSILE SYSTEMS   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
One of the basic assets contributing to success of both offensive and defensive operations has been and remains antitank missile (ATGM) systems which can be portable and transportable/portable or carried by vehicles such as wheeled trucks, infantry fighting vehicles (IFV), armored personnel carriers (APC), tanks, helicopters and aircrafts.
The antitank guided missiles provided with HE, HE/fragmentation and fuel-air explosive warheads considerably enhance the tactical capabilities of the ATGM systems.
Thus high fighting capabilities of the systems we offer give us grounds to regard them not only as specialized antitank weapons but also as high-precision multipurpose defense-and-assault weapon which can defeat a large varieties of targets in all tactical depth of the enemy formation.
