In the 1960s and 1970s, the "establishment" was seen as representing restrictive, authoritarian policies.
In the 1980s, conservative critics (particularly in America and Britain) began to assert that liberals had become the new "establishment".

If hippies were anti-establishment, what did they mean by 'establishment'?
The ‘establishment’, in the context of referring to the ‘ruling’ authorities, should be explained because I don’t think the younger generations have the same grasp as we did during the 1960’s.
The establishment, as the hippies portrayed it, mainly referred to those insiders who, by virtue of their position, are able to influence government decisions and thus were yielding extraordinary (extraneous) power.
During the 60’s, those institutions which constituted the core of the establishment and the most damned was (1) the media, (2) corporations and (3) our legislative branch of government… and occasionally Congressmen for being so easily corruptible, whores in the opinion of most hippies.

 The Mooncow Glosses
As any true blue Marxist knows, the word "Establishment" must always be written with the first letter capitalized, while the words surrounding it in the same sentence must be written in their usual cases, and 1337 notation is strictly forbidden.
An exception is that when the word "the", possibly followed by zero or more adjectives, occurs before "Establishment", all the words from "the" to "Establishment" must be capitalized: thus, the fiercely individualistic speak not of "the evil linguistic establishment" nor "the evil Linguistic Establishment", but always of "The Evil Linguistic Establishment".
To understand what postmodernism is, we first observe that the term "postmodernism" deconstructs itself by highlighting the postmodernist/non-postmodernist dichotomy, a hierarchical opposition which is the hallmark of the modern Western Imperialist Establishment thought after the Enlightenment.
