  TRAINING IN "ANTIPSYCHIATRY"
If antipsychiatry is merely a label for any criticism, apart from psychotherapy, of the "biological" disease model of mental illness, then its position may actually need strengthening in the current psychiatric scene, not undermining.
Antipsychiatry is a term loosely applied to several critical views of psychiatry, such as those of Thomas Szasz, R. Laing and Franco Basaglia (Tantam, 1991).
Antipsychiatry can be seen as having arisen as part of a general cultural critique of the 1960s.

Postpsychiatry:  a new direction for mental health
It is hard to imagine the emergence of "antipaediatrics" or "critical anaesthetics" movements, yet antipsychiatry and critical psychiatry are well established and influential.
Antipsychiatry argued that psychiatry was repressive and based on a mistaken medical ideology, and its proponents wanted to liberate mental patients from its clutches.
It does not seek to replace the medical techniques of psychiatry with new therapies or new paths towards "liberation." It is not a set of fixed ideas and beliefs, more a set of signposts that can help us move on from where we are now.

But few are aware of many of the specifics of such critical perspectives beyond knowing, for instance, that we oppose involuntary commitment, forced drugging and electroshock, etc., as well as the legal use of "insanity" or "diminished capacity" defenses to absolve guilt when criminal intent is shown.
It is also the case that prominent libertarian psychiatrists such as Thomas Szasz and Peter Breggin would be the first to admit that the term "antipsychiatry" is something of a misnomer, that neither they nor most libertarians are opposed to everything which is done in the name of psychiatry.
To give some historical perspective, after having initial widespread success and significant impact in the late 60s and early 70s, the antipsychiatry movement was generally considered to have been effectively marginalized into irrelevancy for many years while the "new psychiatry"-- biopsychiatry --came to the fore.

The draft is described as "the collective views of an international group of [unnamed] experts," but it seems rather to be the work of lawyers who have been trapped in a time warp since the 1970s.
The chief goal of antipsychiatry legal reform in the United States was to protect the "rights" of the mentally ill, even if that meant that their needs were never met.
But families are specifically permitted by the draft to protest and appeal against psychiatric treatment, even after two independent mental health care professionals and an independent court-like authority have concluded that the patient is incompetent and that treatment is necessary.

There are thousands of us antipsychiatry activists in Canada, the US and Europe.
Our struggles are fundamentally human rights struggles for ourselves and our brothers and sisters around the world who've been psychiatrized, seriously harmed, and sometimes killed by psychiatry's so-called safe, effective, and lifesaving drugs, electroshock and physical restraints.

Since Laing refused to view mental illness in biomedical/clinical terms, he has often been labeled as part of the so-called 'antipsychiatry' movement, alongside figures such as David Cooper, Thomas Szasz and Michel Foucault.
He never tried to deny that mentally ill people are in need of help - he simply did not believe that conventional psychiatry provided the answer.

Nonetheless, "anti-psychiatry" has had an anti-authoritarian popular, even romantic, appeal as an attack on psychiatrists' use of psychiatric diagnosis, drug and ECT treatment and involuntary hospitalisation.
Over recent years psychiatry has become more biological in its approach, partly as a reaction to the perceived threats to its foundation from antipsychiatry.
Doctors tend to view the mentally ill as blameless victims of brain disease and a structural and physiological basis for mental illness is assumed to have been demonstrated (Double 1992a).

Bell also said that prevention measures are not generally welcomed even in the mental health community, where they are sometimes perceived as taking resources away from treatment.
