Alkaloids   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-23)
The anesthetic properties of tropane alkaloids may relate to their interference with acetylcholine, perhaps by competing with it at the synaptic junctions, thus blocking or inhibiting nerve impulses.
It acts as a drying agent in the treatment of hay fever and is also used to treat spasm and increased movement of both the intestines in irritable bowel syndrome and the bladder in urinary tract infections.
Hyoscyamine is a belladonna alkaloid in a class of drugs known as anticholinergic antispasmodics.

Cryogenine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cryogenine, also known as vertine or (10α)-4,5-dimethoxy-2-hydroxylythran-12-one, is a biphenylquinolizidine lactone alkaloid from Heimia salicifolia and Heimia myrtifolia.
It has anticholinergic properties and produces mild euphoria as well as aching of the muscles when taken in large doses.
The freebase form melts at 250-251 °C and is soluble in moderatly polar organic solvents such as chloroform, methylene chloride, benzene, and methanol, but is insoluble in water and petroleum ether.

Incapacitating agent - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Although incapacitation may result from physiological changes such as mucous membrane irritation, diarrhea, or hyperthermia, the term "incapacitating agent" as militarily defined refers to a compound that produces temporary and nonlethal impairment of military performance by virtue of its psychobehavioral or CNS effects.
The use of chemicals to induce altered states of mind dates to antiquity and includes the use of plants such as thornapple (Datura stramonium) that contain combinations of anticholinergic alkaloids.
One of the anticholinergic compounds, 3-quinuclidinyl benzilate, was assigned the NATO code BZ and was weaponized beginning in the 1960s for possible battlefield use.

 Belladonna atropine
Obtained from plants of the Solanaceae family, it is one of the belladonna alkaloids related to atropine.
It acts as an anticholinergic, inhibiting the passage of certain nerve impulses.
Atropine a naturally occurring alkaloid of "atropa belladonna", is a competitive antagonist of muscarinic cholinergic receptors.

eMedicine - Plant Poisoning, Alkaloids - Tropane : Article Excerpt by: Richard A Wagner, MD, PhD
A subgroup of the alkaloids is the alkaloid amines.
The 3 major pharmacologic groups of alkaloid amines are the hallucinogenic alkaloid amines, the stimulant alkaloid amines, and the highly anticholinergic tropane alkaloids (also called the belladonna alkaloids or bicyclic alkaloids).
Tropane alkaloids are found in all parts of the plants, with highest concentrations in roots and seeds.

Medicinal Plants History Summary   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-23)
An estimated two-fifths of all modern pharmaceutical products in the United States contain one or more naturally derived ingredients, the majority of which are secondary metabolites, such as alkaloids, glycosides, terpenes, steroids, and other classes grouped according to their physiological activity in humans or chemical structure.
To illustrate the breadth of human reliance on medicinal plants, the accompanying table provides a list of the most significant plants, their uses in modern medicine, and the major secondary metabolites responsible for their activities.

The effects you describe are known as anticholinergic side effects.
I suspect the propietary part of this herbal formula contained a plant alkaloid with anticholinergic properties.
The good news is that anticholinergic side effects usually stop when you stop the drug, so it's unlikely that you did yourself any permanent harm.

eMedicine - Plant Poisoning, Alkaloids - Tropane : Article by Richard A Wagner, MD, PhD
Tropane alkaloids are not included in standard drugs of abuse or comprehensive toxicology panels; serum drug concentrations are neither helpful nor readily available to aid in initial management.
Tropane alkaloids are lipophilic and cross the blood-brain barrier; hemodialysis and hemoperfusion are generally ineffective.
Specific antidote for tropane alkaloid toxicity is physostigmine salicylate, a reversible acetylcholinesterase inhibitor capable of directly antagonizing CNS manifestations of anticholinergic toxicity.

As 2-butanone is more nonpolar than acetonitrile, it assists in the elution of these hydrophobic anticholinergic compounds.
Five anticholinergic compounds are resolved successfully with a PRP-1 polymeric column and a slightly basic mobile phase, but a C8 silica column is better suited for the more hydrophobic compounds (cyclobenzaprine, procyclidine, and dicyclomine).
