Topic: Anticlimaxes

War Of The Worlds - Objectivism Online Forum
I was talking about reading the novel, less for getting a better appreciation the message about the story (no need to plug it), more about the appreciation of the technique of how the story was told in novel form as opposed to movie form.
An anticlimax is an anticlimax, no matter how well it was presented.
The term anticlimax refers to a development after the climax that does not follow from it.

As uneven an album as Reed has released, it might be easier to take if there had been more of them in the past seven or eight years.
Instead, it feels like the latest in a series of anticlimaxes.
Its spareness might pass for daring from other artists, but Reed could dispense tracks like the ponderous "Future Farmers Of America," "White Prism," "Modern Dance" ("Maybe I should be in Edinburgh / in a kilt in Edinburgh / doin' a modern dance"), and the patience-testing 18-minute mumble "Like A Possum" in his sleep.

As Election Day nears, an anonymous leaflet on the family's dubious past ripples through the community, leaving Baye to seek out her political enemies.
The leaflet mystery, a dark ancestral secret, and a key murder scene are all staged as anticlimaxes, no more worthy of emphasis than any other moments in the film.
Only in the masterful final shot does Chabrol justify this grand shrug of a movie by suggesting that an amoral clan like the Charpin-Vasseurs doesn't take their sins all that seriously, either.

Perhaps the letdown lies in pinning hopes on an abstraction, in this case a number (2000 or 2001, depending on who’s counting).
Such anticlimaxes are inevitable when products of the human mind govern all awareness of what is and what may never be.
So now everyone wants to forget the affair and move on, flip the TV channel and reach for another snack.

In a voice-over, James tells us right from the start that ''secrets and discontent lie beneath even the smoothest surface," so we know we're in for 90 obvious minutes, but it's cruel that they aren't more fun.
The story peels back a series of anticlimaxes, including a cockamamie illness and some snoozy rapprochements.

A new biography of Sinclair Lewis, whose novels have been regarded as old but not classic for half a century, is decidedly not in demand.
Lewis's dismal reputation stems largely from the trajectory of his career, which concluded with one of the longest and most depressing anticlimaxes in American letters.
Over the next nine years Lewis wrote four more best sellers—Babbitt (1922), Arrowsmith (1925), Elmer Gantry (1927), and Dodsworth (1929)—all important books, though none could rival Main Street, and each was worse than the previous one.

It's not as funny as Twain's comedy pieces, and the plotting is frustrating, chock full of anticlimaxes and poor timing in switching between threads.
Still, Tom Sawyer became one of the keystones of American popular culture, both in the 1870s and again in the 1990s when it was reincarnated as The Simpsons.
