  REGULATORY ACTIONS TO ENHANCE APPROPRIATE
This study reviewed the regulatory actions taken against antidiarrhoeal drugs in the five-year period 1989-1993, the period around widespread distribution of the WHO publication "The Rational Use of Drugs in the Management of Acute Diarrhoea in Children".
WHO reviewed the literature on the most commonly used antidiarrhoeal agents in the late 1980s and concluded that none of the reviewed substances (see table on this panel) have a place in the management of acute diarrhoea in children.
Antidiarrhoeal drugs are difficult to withdraw in developing countries, if they are widely registered in industrialized countries.

The effect of methanolic extract of Asparagus pubescens root on experimentally-induced diarrhoea and ulceration was investigated in rats.
The results indicate that its antidiarrhoeal and antiulcerogenic effects might in part be due to its @a"2-adrenoceptor stimulation and its active constituents respectively.

 1.4 Antidiarrhoeal drugs
Antidiarrhoeal agents reduce both the frequency and urgency of diarrhoea but should be used with caution in the elderly, patients with colitis or where there is suspicion of an invasive organism.
in a dose of 30-60mg every 4-6 hours is an effective antidiarrhoeal but may cause dependence if used long term.
Alternatively, loperamide 2mg capsules may be given in a dose of 4mg stat followed by 2mg after each loose stool up to a maximum of 16mg daily.
