This is the story behind Antietam National Battlefield in Sharpsburg, Maryland -- now a serene, pastoral part of western Maryland, punctuated by fields, small towns, and the gently rolling hills at the eastern edge of the Appalachian mountains.
Antietam is interesting in that the lay of the land is similar to what it would have been during the time of the battle.
This was open farmland, and the battlefield is still mostly open field, unlike many other civil war battlefields that are now grown over with brush or woodlands.
