Topic: Antifascism

  Review: "Fascism/Antifascism" by Jean Barrot
All manifestations of antifascism ultimately strengthen the democratic state at the expense of the class struggle; thus both fascism and its nemesis antifascism lead to totalitarianism (the strong state) not communism.
Given this, it is no wonder that many of the struggles the working class engage in (such as the fight against fascism) are at best futile and at worst counterproductive; the working class themselves may merely be contributing to the state's tendency to totalitarianism.
The point is that many people become involved in antifascism not to support democracy but simply because they recognize the need to organize specifically against the BNP and similar groups who intimidate minorities, and against racist attacks in general.

Antifascism as a political orientation, as a way of life, as a political redefinition of Jewish identity in the immediate postwar period, operated in relation to state definitions of antifascism ranging from official party positions to opportunistic lip-service to the Soviet occupation forces.
Antifascism came to be instrumentalized for the purposes of creating a society in east Germany molded according to the Soviet model.
Official antifascism remained the basic context of the lives, aspirations, activities of those who decided to contribute to the development of a just and democratic society in the East —and, despite the developments of the early 1950s, part of official antifascism remained an official denial of anti-Semitism.

Antifascism, as a political posture that called for radical reforms toward economic reconstruction and racial equality in a democratic constitutional order, provided McWilliams with a basic continuity of political instinct.
Many scholars have viewed left-wing antifascism as a movement that directed its attention solely to international developments, such as the Spanish Civil War, at the expense of domestic concerns.
McWilliams's antifascism was rooted in the political environment of California, which had a history of repressing dissident political expression; for example, the state's Criminal Syndicalism Act of 1919 allowed it to prosecute those whose beliefs it found subversive.

In order to understand the history and modern forms of antifascism, however, it is first necessary to explain what fascism itself is. It arose as a political ideology in Italy in the early 20th century, with Mussolini as its principle theorist.
Clearly, antifascism was a critical part in undermining the fascist government and helping to free Italy.
Decades after Italy was liberated from the fascist government and had made the successful transition to a democratic republic, the threat of fascism remained and antifascist groups continued to fight it.

 FASCISM/ANTIFASCISM - AUTHORS COMMENTS (1998)
Anything communist inevitably goes beyond the boundary of antifascism, and sooner or later clashes with it.
When Spanish workers took arms against the military putsch in July '36, they were obviously fighting fascism, but (whatever they may have called themselves) they were not acting as anti-fascists, as their move aimed both at the fascists and the democratic state.
But if we abandon the assumptions, first, that it is the state (capital) that always moves first (with the proletariat as hapless respondants), and, second, that antifascism is a homogeneous phenomenon that, by its very nature, takes the side of the democratic state, we get quite a different picture of this particular arena of struggle.

Liberal antifascism treated fascism as a perversion of Western civilization, thereby generating an obverse effect: the sado-masochistic fascination with fascism as manifested by the collection of Nazi bric-a-brac.
The essence of antifascism consists of struggling against fascism while supporting democracy; in other words, of struggling--not for the destruction of capitalism, but to force capitalism to renounce its totalitarian form.
Strictly speaking, the error of antifascism is not in struggling against fascism but in giving precedence to this struggle, which renders it ineffective.

The Antifascist Classroom (1403976120) BLESSING - Palgrave Macmillan
This study explores the history of the "new school" that developed in the immediate postwar period and its role in communicating antifascism to young people in the Soviet zone.
Particularly interesting is her empathetic and lively analysis of thousands of essays and compositions of school children from the period itself, which she has found in the archives.”—Norman M. Naimark, author of The Russians in Germany: A History of the Soviet Zone of Occupation, 1945-1949.
She incisively connects antifascism to Germany’s humanist tradition but exposes as well how it blurred the Nazi past and encouraged narratives of victimhood.

Memoirs of a revolutionary (A. Stinas, Greece): Nationalism and antifascism   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
The extracts we're publishing from the book by A Stinas, a revolutionary communist from Greece (1), are an attack on the antifascist Resistance during the Second World War.
They thus contain a pitiless denunciation of the fusion of three mystifications which are particularly murderous for the proletariat: the 'defence of the USSR', nationalism and 'democratic antifascism'.
The explosion of nationalisms in what used to be the USSR and its empire in eastern Europe, like the development of huge 'antifascist' ideological campaigns, in the countries of western Europe in particular, make these extracts, written at the end of the 40s, as relevant as ever (2).

Revolutionary antifascism is based on principles which differ fundamentally from the principles which inform most state-funded antiracist groups, and most state-funded multiculturalism societies.
The principles which underlie revolutionary antifascism are simple, few, and straightforward.
Revolutionary antifascism is the institution of tactical policies in the present conjunction that lead, with a certain definable tendency, to a future where fascism is no longer possible.

Herfried Münkler explores how antifascism served as a foundational myth for the GDR as a way to distinguish itself from the West and to legitimate itself domestically.
The contributions by Ehrhart Neubert and Peter Maser suggest that some GDR citizens rejected the increasingly stale state-sponsored antifascism in favor of an alternative notion of antifascism with a more balanced understanding of the nature of resistance and the diversity of victims of National Socialism.
Harmut Kühne categorizes the Schröder/Fischer government as being tied to the generation of 1968, and he posits that there is a certain arrogance to the way Schröder uses morality as a weapon in politics as seen through the public spotlight that was gleaned through the parliamentary debate on outlawing the NPD.

But it is good that you chose the Spanish Civil War, as the proper terrain for discussing the nature of fascism and, equally important, of antifascism.
The voices of this generation of Spaniards are unknown in the history to which you have been exposed, of which this week has been a good representation-but this ignorance has a cost.
What I want to do today is to present their point of view, the point of view of antifascism, because it is extremely important for you to understand not only fascism, but also antifascism.

 Review: "Fascism/Antifascism" by Jean Barrot
This text first appeared in 1979 as part of an introduction to a collection of writings by Italian left communists (Bordigans) on the Spanish Civil War.
Although not recent, the pamphlet is being reviewed here as it concerns a contemporary issue: the relation of antifascism to the class struggle.
Before exploring alternative perspectives on antifascism, however, it is only fair to measure Barrot's account against current antifascist groups.
