  Antifreeze (coolant)
Antifreeze is a water-based liquid coolant used in gasoline and diesel engines.
The term 'coolant' is to be preferred as, in warm climates, the effect of these compounds is to increase the boiling point of the coolant, which should then be more properly referred to as 'anti-boil'.
Ethylene glycol antifreeze is poisonous and should be kept away from any person or creature (children and especially dogs) that might be tempted by its sweetish taste.

Antifreeze Coolant - Radiator Coolant - Engine Coolant
Antifreeze Coolant should be efficient in transferring the heat as well as preventing scale and corrosion of the radiator and the engine cooling system.
Antifreeze Coolant is antifreeze during the winter due to low freezing point and an anti boiling during the summer season due to high boiling point.
Antifreeze Coolant or Radiator Coolant concentrate can not be used directly in car as it has a poor heat transfer property, therefore it is always recommend dilute in to water to increase the heat transfer property.

 4aDrive Forums - Overheating
The coolant is first heated by the cylinder barrels, and then hot coolant is subsequently routed through the cylinder heads and intake manifold before returning through the thermostat to the radiator.
The hot coolant from the block re-enters the water pump, and hits the other side of the 2-way thermostat, where it is either re-circulated back through the engine or directed to the radiator, depending on temperature.
Dual-acting means that the thermostat regulates coolant flow both in to as well as out of the engine, while the bypass portion of the thermostat circuit supplies the water pump with a full flow of liquid coolant at all times.

AMSOIL - Propylene Glycol Antifreeze and Engine Coolant
AMSOIL Antifreeze and Coolant (ANT) is formulated to provide benefits far beyond those found in today’s conventional antifreeze and coolant products.
AMSOIL Antifreeze and Coolant is dyed neutral yellow and is compatible with all ethylene and propylene antifreeze and coolant formulations on the market, including DEX-Cool®, Sierra® and Zerex®.
AMSOIL Antifreeze and Engine Coolant never exceeded a 3 mg loss in any of those metals in a testing period that was run for 10 weeks, three weeks longer than required tests.

Initially it is assumed that Orange, Red and Amber colored Coolants are Life Extended Coolant and Blue, Greenish, etc., are conventional type but now, a days it is not so.
The distilled and demineralise water have own their problems like affinity to the Aluminium metal etc. The Freezing point of water is 0º C and in the world there are so many regions where the temperature goes below 0º C in winter and the water is freezed in vehicles and became non- operative.

Why and how to check the antifreeze or coolant level
Checking the coolant or antifreeze level is very easy and it might make a big difference on the engine health and proper functioning since failures in this area could seriously damage it.
First of all, it is important to consider that new cars which aren't more than about five years old usually have a coolant or antifreeze which lasts more than the rest of the cars lifetime, having what is known as extended life antifreeze.
If the coolant level is between the mark which says full and the one saying low then it is correct, if it doesn't reach the low mark then you should add more until it reaches the proper level.

Pelican Parts Technical BBS - leaking antifreeze
my car dumped some coolant at Albertson's tonight so I (having no light :( opted to just buy some antifreeze and limp it the (short/5 blocks) back to my dorm.
I can't really do anything as far as troubleshooting/repair right now b/c it's a starless/moonless night and i see anything under the hood.
Considering I'm in MT my biggest fear is that it'll get really cold and my car will be void of antifreeze and I will have a giant frozen paperwieght for an engine
