Dosage is established depending on the patient's general health status and age, the type of antihelminthic drug used, and the type of parasitic infestation being treated.
Antihelminthic drugs must be taken exactly as directed to completely rid the body of the parasitic infestation, and for as long as directed.
Antihelminthic drugs are also contraindicated for persons diagnosed with ulcers of the digestive tract, especially ulcerative colitis.

Transverse CT scan through the liver showing ruptured Type I hydatid cysts in a Saudi Arabian child who was treated medically with an oral antihelminthic which killed the cysts and caused spontaneous rupture.
Because the cysts did not become smaller and there was no evidence of biliary obstruction, the rupture was assumed to be contained.
The fact that the cyst became smaller and less spherical proves that this is a communicating rupture even though dilated bile ducts are not demonstrable.

Among the list of antihelminthic drugs used to treat pinworm infestation are albendazole, mebendazole, piperazine, and pyrantel pamoate.
When using chemotherapeutic strategies for treating pinworm infestation, it is usually most effective to treat all family members on the same day to limit the possibility for reintroduction of the worm.
Since the antihelminthic drugs only target adult worms, it is necessary to repeat the drug treatment regimen two weeks following the initial treatment to kill any pinworms that may have hatched during the interim period.

Neurology -- Correspondence for Carpio and Hauser, 59 (11) 1730-1734
As to point 6, we found that 10 of 30 patients treated with antihelminthic agents had residual calcifications compared to 13 of 41 not treated.
Thus, the argument by Dr. Cuetter that treatment with antihelminthic drugs would kill all active, live intraparenchymal cysts and prevent subsequent seizures from future cyst degeneration was not substantiated.
In addition antihelminthic treatment will destroy active intraventricular cysts prone to produce obstruction of CSF flow with consequent acute hydrocephalus which requires emergent ventriculostomy.

E-epilepsy - Prognosis for seizure recurrence in patients with newly diagnosed neurocysticercosis
It was found that about 40% of people presenting with an acute symptomatic seizure in the context of neurocysticercosis went on to have recurrent seizures.
For most of these patients, onset of epilepsy was within the first 12 months of the acute insult to the brain.
The authors conclude that patients with neurocysticercosis should receive anti-seizure medication until the acute lesion clears on CT, but that there is not a place for antihelminthic medication in the prevention of late epilepsy in these patients.

In other words, the first objective of regular antihelminthic chemotherapy would be to reduce morbidity by reducing the intensity of infection, even though individuals may not be completely cured and will continue to be exposed to reinfection.
The latter is because none of the antihelminthic drugs available are 100 percent effective, especially against hookworms and Trichuris trichiura (Albonico et al., 1994; Albonico et al., 1995).
Stoltzfus commented that the purpose of the ongoing Zanzibar study is to look at the long-term effect on the shift of the hemoglobin distribution in a population of school children that were hookworm endemic and who were then dewormed.

WHO is committed to helping Member States ensure access to essential antihelminthic drugs (albendazole or mebendazole).
The goal is to regularly administer these drugs to at least 75% of school-aged children at risk of morbidity by 2010.
In 2004, Cambodia was the first country to reach WHO's target by regularly providing antihelminthic drugs to 84% of its school-aged children.

eMedicine - Neuroimaging in Neurocysticercosis : Article by Arturo Carpio, MD
The objective was to assess the effect of drug treatment in human NC in relation to survival, cyst resolution on imaging studies, subsequent seizures, and hydrocephalus.
The authors concluded that insufficient evidence was available to assess whether antihelminthic drug is associated with beneficial results in NC.
Surgical treatment should be restricted to removal of the parasite located in the subarachnoid (racemose form) or ventricular area, and to ventriculoperitoneal shunting for the treatment of decompensated hydrocephalus (Image 9).

This slight difference in location of the adult worm may also imply differentiated exposure to antihelminthic drugs that act in the intestinal lumen.

These parameters were again determined at 3 and 6 months after combined therapy of ARV and antihelminthic drugs.
A general correlation exists between HIV plasma viral load and the number of excreted worm eggs in stool of studied candidates.
Results of this study showed that, the combine use of ARV and antihelminthic drugs in the treatment of HIV/AIDS patients is safe, well tolerated and offers effective viral load suppression with attendant increase in immunological values.

This review article summarizes a case of strongyloidiasis and various aspects of strongyloidiasis, with emphasis on epidemiology, life cycle of Strongyloides stercoralis, clinical manifestations of the disease, corticosteroids and strongyloidiasis, diagnostic aspects of the disease, various host defense pathways against strongyloidiasis, and available treatment options.

The proposed research program is designed to explore the structure and function of extracellular signaling molecules involved in the morphological differentiation of the filamentous microbe Streptomyces coelicolor.
coelicolor is a model streptomycete; this genus is responsible for the production of approximately 70% of the antibiotics currently prescribed, as well antihelminthic and immunosuppressive agents and drugs with antineoplastic activity.
The exchange of signaling molecules among S. coelicolor cells is evidenced by the complete rescue of development when two S. coelicolor bald (bld) mutants blocked in morphogenesis are plated near one another.
