Antillia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Antillia (or Antilia) was a phantom island said to lie in the Atlantic Ocean far to the west of Spain.
On maps, Antillia was typically shown as being almost the size of Portugal, lying around two hundred miles west of the Azores.
Some, the first being Peter Martyr d'Anghiera in 1493, believe that Antillia represented a previous discovery of the West Indies, and as a result the Caribbean islands became known as the Antilles.

The confusion here is that although we have established that the Azores and Antillia are two separate places, the name “seven cities”, is one used in the Azores to describe the sunken lake of Sao Miguel.
Later, when it became apparent that no such island existed the location of Antillia was given to one of several Caribbean islands, and is still the name given to the areas major chain of islands, the Greater Antilles.
It means that if Antillia was already deeply fragmented by the Atlantis disaster, successive earthquakes and volcanic activity would have exacted a heavy toll, to the point of destroying it completely.

Antillia prays in the temple for Demetrios and her father, but is interrupted by the High Priest, Azor (Edward Platt), who tells her that she should pray to the one true God.
Antillia and Demetrios, who have gotten all cosy by this stage, continue to make smoochy talk while what looks like a gigantic fish swims up behind their boat.
As Demetrios comforts Antillia, the narrator explains that the survivors of this catastrophe took Atlantean knowledge to all corners of the globe (which seems odd, considering that all the survivors appear to be slaves, rather than actual Atlanteans).

 Atlantis, the Lost Continent
There’s a very good reason for this, as a matter of fact, for Antillia (as she calls herself) claims to be a princess from a wealthy and faraway land, situated somewhere beyond the Pillars of Hercules— that is to say, out in the Atlantic Ocean.
Nevertheless, both men are forced to agree that she must have come from somewhere, and her ignorance and bafflement in the face of local customs suggests that wherever that was is far away.
John Dall as Zaren and Joyce Taylor as Antillia manage a little better than Hall, Taylor in that her performance hits two notes instead of one, and Dall in that his monotone is just a slight bit livelier.

Myths to Reality: Portuguese Cartographers   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
The name “Antillia” is variously interpreted as having one of the following meanings: 1) an isle “ante” or in front of Europe; 2) an isle “opposite” Tile—which was an old Roman name for Iceland (thus, ant-tile); or 3) the “ancient isle” derived from the word antiglia.
Figure 1 shows a typical version of Antillia as a schematic, rectilinear isle located someplace in the mid-Atlantic Ocean opposite Portugal and the Strait of Gibraltar.  Some writers such as William Babcock and Karre Prytz regard this Antillia as an early representation for the East Coast of North America.
Bianco’s Antillia with its peculiar, macro-peninsula in the approximate shape of Florida, is only one of 13 charts that show some form of a macro-peninsula across the Atlantic from Europe.  Data from these maps showing the approximate latitude and distance west of Europe are presented in Tables I and II.

Antillia or the Isle of Seven Cities was a phantom island said to lie in the Atlantic Ocean far to the west of Spain.
The story about Antillia which is assigned to either Aristotle or to pseudo-Aristotle seems to have been confirmed during the 1990's by coins from Carthage, dated 350-320 BC.

And from the island of Antillia, which you call the Island of the Seven Cities, to the very famous island of Cipangu are ten sections, that is 2,500 miles.
A mapmaker who thought in terms of a globe could locate Antillia somewhat further west than might be suggested by an ungraduated mappamundi or portolan chart in which it was drawn at the left-hand edge of the parchment.
This concept is not, in substance, different from that expressed in the relevant part of the Vinland map and there copied from a model similar to Bianco's world map of 1436 (Slide #241) in which the design is compressed within the limits of the available space at the extreme left of the vellum sheet.

Antillia, which is the same name, if not the same island that the Cartaginians so zealously tried to keep secret, was regarded by the Hispanic peoples as the ideal place of refuge during the conquest of Spain by the Arabs.
On ancient maps (Antillia) is generally located in the center of the Atlantic Ocean.
In this aspect, the Portuguese name Antilha (ante ilha), seems logical, which signifies “the island opposite,” “before” or “in front of,” because it refers to the great island in the middle of the ocean, the one having “seven cities.” This could be the real reason for its name, or just another form of writing Atlantis.

Their aim, it seemed, was the great island called Antillia, as yet unexplored, but reputed to be large enough for many thousand people.
Of Antillia itself, or the Island of the Seven Cities, it is well known that it appeared on the maps of the Atlantic, sometimes under the one name and sometimes under another, six hundred years after the date assigned by the story that has here been told.
It was said by Fernando Columbus to have been revisited by a Portuguese sailor in 1447; and the name appeared on the globe of Behaim in 1492.

Antillia was a fictitious island lying to the west of Europe, first mentioned on a map in 1367.
On the Beccario Map of 1435 lies a large island three times as long as it is wide, labeled "Antillia," which Babcock identifies with a pre-Columbian discovery of Cuba.

Otherwise, the story is a clichéd tale about Demetrios (Anthony Hall) a Greek fisherman who is tempted into going to Atlantis by Antillia (Joyce Taylor), a princess of that doomed land.
Demetrios is soon trapped into slavery, a situation which leads him to hobnob with the oppressed masses and plan a strategy to get them out of there before the rumblings of imminent submersion send the whole kit and caboodle into the briny deep.
