  2.972 How Anti-Lock Brakes Work
Antilock brake systems are designed to sense wheel locking before it occurs and then release the brakes so that locking does not occur.
The pressure of the hydraulic fluid in the braking cylinders is proportional to the force applied to the brake pedal by the driver.
When the brakes are engaged under normal use (the antilock braking system is not engaged), the valve is open, and the pressure in the chamber is the same as the pressure in the master cylinder.

Q&As: Antilock brakes: cars, trucks, motorcycles
Antilocks prevent wheels from skidding by monitoring the speed of each wheel and automatically pulsing the brake pressure on any wheels where skidding is detected.
Brake pressure to the front wheels of four-wheel systems is controlled independently to maximize stopping power, which is concentrated in the front.
Antilocks were standard on 1985 S class Mercedes models and standard or optional on about 30 domestic and foreign car models during the 1987 model year.

 Antilock Brakes
An ABS (antilock brake system) is designed to control braking effort in such a way as to ensure that none of the brakes lock up and cause the tires to skid.
All that did was to allow the brakes that had locked up to unlock and permit the tires to roll again — and thus you regained control.
But during antilock braking situations, the control unit operates the valves to override the supply of air to the chambers.

When you push on the brake pedal, hydraulic pressure is generated in the master cylinder that is transmitted to the actuators -the wheel cylinders and caliper pistons- through the brake lines, thus applying the brakes.
The operation of the braking system depends on the integrity of the hydraulic system, the master cylinder must be capable of generating several hundred pounds per square inch of pressure and the rest of the system must maintain the pressure without leaking.
With a drum brake assembly, the drum, shaped like a pie plate, rotates with the wheel and the fixed shoes move out to engage the drum when the brakes are applied.

Anti-lock braking system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The purpose of this is twofold: to allow the driver to maintain steering control under heavy braking and, in most situations, to shorten braking distances (by allowing the driver to hit the brake fully without the fear of skidding or loss of control).
However, a limited form of anti-lock braking, utilising a valve which could adjust front to rear brakeforce distribution when a wheel locked, was fitted to the 1964 Austin 1800.
ABS brakes are the subject of some widely-cited experiments in support of risk compensation theory, which support the view that drivers adapt to the safety benefit of ABS by driving more aggressively.

Antilock braking systems are designed to prevent skids that result when your wheels "lock up," or completely stop turning.
Antilock brakes are an increasingly common feature, at least as an option, on most cars and light trucks.
The system repeatedly applies and releases brake pressure much faster than you could (this is what causes the pulsing in the brake pedal).

Racing Schools Safety Fast: Antilock Braking
There are two primary reasons for this: 1) It isn't entirely clear that antilock braking will reduce stopping distance for the skilled driver; and 2) Antilock brakes add system complexity, cost and weight to the race car, the disadvantages of which outweigh any possible advantages.
I don't believe that it indicates that antilock brakes are ineffective or dangerous in and of themselves.
The problem is that stopping with antilock brakes, in an emergency situation, requires an entirely different braking technique than the one used with conventional brakes, and virtually no drivers have had or taken the opportunity to learn this new technique.

From the age of 15, most drivers are taught to pump their brakes in an emergency stop on icy or slick roads to avoid the wheels locking and the car spinning out of control.

Researchers have determined that airbags and antilock braking systems do not reduce the likelihood of accidents or injuries because they may encourage more aggressive driving, thwarting the potential benefits of such safety features.
The behavior responsible for this seeming paradox is called the offset hypotheses, which predicts that consumers adapt to innovations meant to improve safety by becoming less vigilant about safety, said Fred Mannering, a professor of civil engineering at Purdue University.
