Antimatter weapon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An antimatter weapon is a hypothetical device using antimatter as a power source, a propellant, or an explosive for a weapon.
Antimatter annihilates with regular matter on contact, so it would be necessary to prevent contact, for example by producing antimatter in the form of solid charged or magnetized particles, and suspending them using electromagnetic fields in near-perfect vacuum.
Antimatter catalyzed nuclear pulse propulsion proposes to use antimatter as a "trigger" to initiate nuclear explosions using much smaller quantities of fissile or fusible materials than is presently the case, for the purposes of spacecraft propulsion.

The amount of energy required exceeds the capabilities of the small Genesis device by far, so a quantum uncertainty effect like in the quantum torpedoes might be involved or energy would have to be produced from part of the reacting matter itself in a kind of chain-reaction.
Considering that positrons are actually antimatter, it is highly improbable that these particles are employed in the positronic brain.

 More on Antimatter
The scarcity of antimatter means that it is not readily available to be used as fuel, although it could be used in antimatter catalyzed nuclear pulse propulsion.
Counterbalancing this, when antimatter annihilates with ordinary matter energy equal to twice the mass of the antimatter is liberated—so energy storage in the form of antimatter could (in theory) be 100% efficient.
It is hoped that antimatter could be used as fuel for interplanetary travel or possibly interstellar travel, but it is also feared that if humanity ever gets the capabilities to do so, there could be the construction of antimatter weapons.

Antimatter is matter that is composed of the antiparticle s of those that constitute normal matter.
With current technology, it is considered possible to attain antimatter for 25 billion dollar s per gram (roughly 1,000 times the equivalent cost of the equivalent amount of energy in space shuttle propellants) by optimizing the collision and collection parameters, given current electricity generation costs.

Antimatter detonations would have a characteristic spectrum (like at 0.5 MeV for electron-positron annihilation), and it is not seen in GRBs or elsewhere.

The word antimatter properly refers to (elementary) antiparticles, composite antiparticles made with them (such as antihydrogen) and to larger assemblies of either.
In 1932, soon after the prediction of positrons by Paul Dirac, Carl D. Anderson found that cosmic-ray collisions produced these particles in a cloud chamber— a particle detector in which moving electrons (or positrons) leave behind trails as they move through the gas.
In recent years, complete atoms of antimatter have been assembled out of antiprotons and positrons, collected in electromagnetic traps.

The positron has an electric charge of +1, a spin of 1/2, and the same mass as an electron.
Anderson also unsuccessfully suggested renaming electrons "negatrons." The positron was the first evidence of antimatter and was discovered by passing cosmic rays through a gas chamber and a lead plate surrounded by a magnet to distinguish the particles by bending differently charged particles in different directions.
