Antioch Arrow - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Antioch Arrow, from California, was on the seminal hardcore/emo label Gravity Records, responsible for putting San Diego on the map in the mid-90's as one of the centers of the movement.
Antioch Arrow was perhaps one of the most "art school" of any of bands of their time, using the fast and chaotic framework of hardcore to create songs that were at times melodic and at times indiscernable but almost always curious and at breakneck speed.
Antioch Arrow's original members were Aaron Montaigne, Mac Mann, Ron Anarchy, Jeff Winterberg, and Aaron Ricards.

scenepointblank: Antioch Arrow - Gems of Masochism   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
It's to Antioch Arrow's credit that they revealed themselves to be far more avant-garde on their last record than their two previous records, In Love With Jetts and The Lady is a Cat, would allow people to assume.
Unlike most of their contemporaries, Antioch Arrow never seem to be aiming their attack at the listener, rather, they instead seem to be focusing it inward, crafting their sound relentlessly.
While not quite a masterpiece in the traditional sense, Antioch Arrow can be credited for taking artistic, dark hardcore to its logical extreme, making all bands that would come after them either pale in comparison or have to start dissecting their final record to even know where to begin creating something even stranger.

 Ink 19 :: Antioch Arrow
One of the bands that kind of had a bad rap around this time was the infamous Antioch Arrow.
Antioch Arrow played spastic emo stuff, similar to what Heroin was doing, but it was a bit more groove influenced, like Universal Order of Armageddon.
It's so different from their early stuff that I wouldn't have known it was Antioch Arrow had I not been informed beforehand.

Having already established their unique version of hardcore over two previous albums, Antioch Arrow decided to embrace the more gothic and garage-y elements of their music, and the resulting Gems of Masochism certainly represented a huge change of focus.
It's hard to overestimate the importance that Antioch Arrow have had on the hardcore punk world of today.
This re-release is a timely reminder of the importance of Antioch Arrow, and their continued influence on underground hardcore punk.

The Greatest Band Of All Time.: I’m Sorry but I Can’t Sit Still: Antioch Arrow
Antioch Arrow, perhaps the greatest band of all time.
Antioch Arrow were five cute boys (Aaron Montaigne, Mac Mann, Ron Anarchy, Jeff Winterberg, Andy Ward) from San Diego, which was a pretty prolific place for music in the mid-‘90s.
It’s difficult to listen to Antioch Arrow for the first time as a wizened resident of the 21st century.

For those who have never heard or seen Antioch Arrow, it is a pretty impossible task to describe them to you.
An Antioch Arrow album or performance is an overwhelming art explosion of noisy poems sprayed in your face in one minute bursts.
Antioch Arrow took the San Diego art hardcore scene to the highest apogee imaginable, and it was beautiful.

Antioch Arrow dismantled, rearranged, and deconstructed everything in the West Coast punk/hardcore scene when they released their debut full-length, Gems of Masochism.
Antioch Arrow splice the divergent influences of Joy Divison, Wire, the Cure, and Fugazi into their sound that revived a whole culture of hardcore punks searching for something different, something more.
And in a time when “punk” has descended into a word splashed across shirts sold in malls and a commodity bought and sold by MTV day in and day out, there is no better time for Antioch Arrow to reintroduce themselves into punk’s sterile existence.

Of the EP cuts, "Times Square" is particularly strong, with muttered vocals and a surging, building current of sound demonstrating how the group made subtle touches as strong for them as flat out energy.

Modern bows are constructed of wood, fiberglass, or graphite or carbon composites, with a taut cord or string connecting the bent ends of the bow.
Arrows are usually made of either aluminum or carbon graphite, pointed at one end and with flight-stabilizing feathers at the other end.
Nevertheless, peoples of East Asia employed warfare archers as recently as the 19th century, and the use of the bow and arrow in hunting and intertribal fighting continues in central Africa and South America.

Splendid Magazine reviews Antioch Arrow: Gems of Masochism
Long out-of-print and lusted after by legions of art punks, Gems of Masochism is the jewel in Antioch Arrow's triple crown.
Their outlandish artistry has in many ways come to typify the genre-smashing San Diego hardcore scene -- a circuit that has unleashed the Locust, Rocket from the Crypt and the VSS upon the world.
Most listeners found Antioch Arrow to be too odd for their own good, but history has looked upon them fondly, and they now stand as the bridge between Wire's scathing minimalism and the art brute nihilism of the Blood Brothers.

Why Antioch Arrow's Gems of Masochism, the San Diego band's final and most formidable release, has languished in obscurity for nearly 10 years is a mystery.
Along with Gravity Records labelmates Angel Hair and Heroin, Antioch Arrow fused the emotionally distraught tone of the times with the dismal disorder of Christian Death, the Damned and the Birthday Party.
But just as Antioch Arrow's appearance seems a bit alienating, it reinforces that Gems of Masochism was -- and still is -- about pushing limits of disturbed music; albeit a decade before its time.

All the old punk and post-punk records I have seem to merge into one indistinct blur of dated rage; most of the recent stuff I own, which I’ve usually burnt myself out on not too long ago, seems mild and lackluster.
For fans of the band’s later work, though, it’s basically a dream come true; I, however, think I prefer the second phase of Antioch Arrow’s existence, if only because I’m such a big fan, these days, of lunacy.

Get Hustle's origins go back to 1995 in San Diego, when Mac Mann (piano, keyboards) and drummer Ron Avila, both previous members of Antioch Arrow decided to assemble their own crew.
Following two years randomly playing across the L.A. club scene, Hustle issued their first disc in 1997, the single "I've Got a Gun I'm a Excited", with contributing bass works from Mackie Osborne, wife of Buzz Osborne of the Melvins.
Still in 1997, the Californians offered their second disc, the EP Now We're All Gone, by that time featuring bassist Andy Ward, also formerly a member of Antioch Arrow.

Candle are a little more awkward; the first track is still nice and reminds me a bit of some late-80's Dischord stuff, but the other one is pretty boring.
This was among the first things that Antioch Arrow recorded, and it is not quite as far-out as some of their later stuff - just good solid frantic Gravity-style emo/hardcore.
Candle plays the same fast and frenzied style and is actually the standout on this record; slightly tighter and the vocals have a nice strained yet controlled quality.

 Aquarius Moon
In those ancient texts Molnar discovered that Aries the Ram was the zodiac symbol for the ancient kingdom of Judea, something that most scholars had apparently missed.
Its appearance on his coin, minted in Antioch around A.D. 6, probably symbolized the solidification of Roman rule of the region.
Based on that information, he then went looking for the kind of celestial event that would have signaled to ancient astrologers like the Magi that something as memorable as the birth of a king was about to take place.

Miasma and the Carousel of Headless Horses are a British instrumental quintet that plays dark, antiquated sounding music encompassing elements of Eastern European folk, avant-rock, broken-down calliope music, and neo-classical film composition.
In keeping with Mimicry tradition, their music can only be compared to many artists at once: in this case Angelo Badalamenti, Astor Piazzolla, Goblin, Art Bears, Burzum, Tom Waits, Antioch Arrow, King Crimson, Bach and Univers Zero.
More a trip to an anachronistic world of neo-baroque psychedelia than a simple study in diced-up ecclecticism, the music on Perils sways between lush chamber orientated melancholia, apocalyptic bombast, and epic ghost train high-drama.
