Antioquia was one of the states in the original "United States of Colombia", and is now a department in the northwest of the Republic of Colombia.
Other important towns are Santa Fe de Antioquia, the old capital located on the Cauca, and Puerto Berrío on the Magdalena.
Prior to the constitution of 1886, Antioquia and the other states were sovereign governments in their own right.

In 1720 a Jesuit college was established at Antioquia under the auspices of Bishop Gomez Friar, of Popayan, and on 5 Feb., 1727, a royal charter was granted to the college, and the fathers were given charge of the church of St. Barbara.

The project is located at the northern end of Colombia’s Central Cordillera, three km south of the town of Zaragoza in the northeastern portion of the Department of Antioquia.
It was gold mining activity in this region that generated an accumulation of wealth in the Department of Antioquia during the 19th century and allowed the expansive industrial development of the Central Colombian region, based out of Medellín.
The northeastern Antioquia region is underlain by rocks of primarily Precambrian, Paleozoic and Jurassic ages, and is divided by a series of major fault zones belonging to the Palestina-Bagre-Nus-Otu system.

The army referred to the killings in Granada as an “isolated incident,” though paramilitaries have been on a slaughter campaign in southeastern Antioquia since last November.
The bodies of the four victims were found several hours later under a bridge, near the border with neighboring Marinilla municipality.
