Topic: Antiphon 1

Antiphon (person) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Antiphon of Rhamnus was an orator and statesman who took up rhetoric as a profession.
Fifteen of Antiphon's speeches are extant: twelve are mere school exercises on fictitious cases, divided into tetralogies, each comprising two speeches for prosecution and defence—accusation, fence, reply, counter-reply; three refer to actual legal processes.
Antiphon is also said to have composed a Τεχνη or art of Rhetoric.

 Barbara P. Wallach, section 1
Antiphon 1 is unique among extant Attic forensic orations in that it involves the prosecution of a woman for murder and features half-brothers as in a homicide case, acting as prosecutor and defense counsel respectively.
It is ironic that the father's avenger in Antiphon 1 is the, not the legitimate sons, but the prosecutor can at least imply that he is the only one acting as a legitimate son ought to.
Gagarin (1997 above, note 1) 114-5 has noted that the prosecutor is careful to identify the guilty concubine as Philoneos', "suggesting that the speaker is concerned that the jurors might think of the other, his mother." At any rate, it makes sense for her son to avoid mentioning her.

 Bryn Mawr Classical Review 2002.09.38
Antiphon the son of Sophilus of Rhamnus is the Antiphon of Ar.
G claims that recent readings of the philosophical fragments make it easier to believe that they could have been written by the author of the law-court speeches, and concludes that the case for unity is not certain but is good enough to serve as a working hypothesis.
He demonstrates, as he has demonstrated before, that the ancient evidence for distinguishing Antiphon the Sophist from the orator is weak and that the ancient evidence for distinguishing the author of the Tetralogies from the author of the law-court speeches is non-existent.

Table of Contents and Excerpt, Gagarin and MacDowell, Antiphon and Andocides
Antiphon's great strength as a logographer is argumentation, the selection, composition, and arrangement of arguments in such a way as to make the best possible case for a client.
Thus the narrative in Antiphon 1 is more detailed and relatively much longer than in 5 or 6, in part because 1 is a speech for the prosecution and thus needs to present the first account of the facts to the jurors, but also because the speaker lacks the evidence that might support other arguments.
Antiphon sometimes blurs the line between the different parts of a speech, moreover, so that even where he moves explicitly from the facts to the argument, as at 5.25, he in fact continues to present a mixture of both with only a shift in emphasis.

Antiphon thought that in this way the area of the circle would be used up, and we should some time have a polygon inscribed in the circle the sides of which, owing to their smallness, coincide with the circumference of the circle.
Antiphon therefore deserves an honourable place in the history of geometry as having originated the idea of exhausting an area by means of inscribed regular polygons with an ever increasing number of sides, an idea upon which...

However, despite the effectiveness of his arguments and in particular of the story he tells, or perhaps because of it, some scholars have suspected (as they have in the case of Antiphon 1) that this speech is also a fictitious literary exercise rather than a genuine speech written for an actual case.
Crime and punishment is more often a story told by the prosecution, as in Antiphon 1, where the storyteller stops at a point just before the end, when only the jury's verdict of guilty is needed to bring the story to its proper conclusion.
Antiphon (see Orator Biographies), who invented the art of logography (probably around 430), was the first of these professional speechwriters and had a very successful career for two decades (he died in 411).

At the time I put Antiphon aside to write a dissertation on Protagoras, and then went on to write on Aeschylus, justice, law, and rhetoric, which has now brought me back at last to this book on Antiphon.
In the last two decades, as I have worked on other subjects, I have never strayed far from Antiphon, and the conviction has strengthened that his work is important for understanding the intellectual movement of the last half of the fifth century, and especially the origin and nature of forensic oratory.
Antiphon's various identities—logographer, Sophist, political adviser, political leader, even dream-interpreter—suggest not so much a multiplicity of persons with the same name living and working in roughly the same time and place, but rather a single individual with a wide-ranging mind, ready to tackle most of the diverse intellectual interests of his day.

Plutarch: Lives of the Ten Orators (1)
ANTIPHON, the son of Sophilus, from the deme of Rhamnus,
He is most accurate in his orations, in invention subtle; and he would frequently baffle his adversary unawares, by a covert sort of pleading; in troublesome and intricate matters he was acute and sharp; and as he was a great admirer of ornamental speaking, he would always adapt his orations to both law and reason.
But when those Four Hundred were overthrown, he with Archeptolemus, who was likewise one of the same number, was accused of the conspiracy, condemned, and sentenced to the punishment due to traitors, his body cast out unburied, and all his posterity infamous on record.

Antiphon – a general title for a hymn or a section of the Psalter; the title describes the manner in which the hymn or Psalter are to be chanted, i.e., by two choirs in turn.
At least theoretically each ode takes its theme from the Biblical canticle (e.g., Ode 1 is patterned after Exodus 15:1-19, the Canticle of Moses) which serves as its prototype.
In current liturgical use, the Prokeimenon is reduced to the refrain and one to four verses of the Psalm being employed.

The Transitus: A Rite of Intensification II
Each Transitus ritual considered in the first part of this article [1] displays consistent elements: the antiphon, "O sanctissima anima"; the psalm, "Voce mea"; the hymn, "Salve, sancte Pater"; and a blessing with the relic of St. Francis.
The rather lengthy reading is followed by the singing or recitation of the antiphon, "O most holy soul." The directives continue: "The priest or chanters then sing or recite Psalm 141 [sic] alternately with the choir or with the people." After the closing of the psalm, the antiphon is repeated and the candles extinguished.
More often than not, the "O sanctissima anima" antiphon is lost or presented as an option; the five Our Fathers, Hail Marys, and Glorys are dropped; the "Salve, sancte Pater" and the use of relic as symbol disappear and then reappear later as an option.
