Antiphon of Rhamnus in Attica, the earliest of the "ten" Attic orators, was born in 480 BC.
Antiphon may be regarded as the founder of political oratory, but he never addressed the people himself except on the occasion of his trial.
Fifteen of Antiphon's speeches are extant: twelve are mere school exercises on fictitious cases, divided into tetralogies, each conting of two speeches for prosecution and defence--accusation, fence, reply, counter-reply; three refer to actual legal processes.

Antiphon's great strength as a logographer is argumentation, the selection, composition, and arrangement of arguments in such a way as to make the best possible case for a client.
Thus the narrative in Antiphon 1 is more detailed and relatively much longer than in 5 or 6, in part because 1 is a speech for the prosecution and thus needs to present the first account of the facts to the jurors, but also because the speaker lacks the evidence that might support other arguments.
Antiphon sometimes blurs the line between the different parts of a speech, moreover, so that even where he moves explicitly from the facts to the argument, as at 5.25, he in fact continues to present a mixture of both with only a shift in emphasis.

G claims that recent readings of the philosophical fragments make it easier to believe that they could have been written by the author of the law-court speeches, and concludes that the case for unity is not certain but is good enough to serve as a working hypothesis.
He demonstrates, as he has demonstrated before, that the ancient evidence for distinguishing Antiphon the Sophist from the orator is weak and that the ancient evidence for distinguishing the author of the Tetralogies from the author of the law-court speeches is non-existent.

My interest in Antiphon was first awakened in a course taught by Tom Cole some forty years ago, when I was an undergraduate at Stanford.
In the last two decades, as I have worked on other subjects, I have never strayed far from Antiphon, and the conviction has strengthened that his work is important for understanding the intellectual movement of the last half of the fifth century, and especially the origin and nature of forensic oratory.
Antiphon's various identities—logographer, Sophist, political adviser, political leader, even dream-interpreter—suggest not so much a multiplicity of persons with the same name living and working in roughly the same time and place, but rather a single individual with a wide-ranging mind, ready to tackle most of the diverse intellectual interests of his day.

The Antiphon was a type of liturgial chant common to Gregorian and other Western chant repertoires and associated principally with antiphonal psalmody.
It is generally a relatively short melody in a simple, syllabic style that serves as a refrain in the singing of the verses of a Psalm or canticle.
There were, however, types of Antiphons not associated with psalmody at all.
