Antique fruit jar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Glass canning jars, also known as fruit jars or Mason jars (named after its inventor John L. Mason, not after freemasonry or the craft of a stonemason) have been around since the early 1850s and today are eagerly sought after by collectors.
There is a section on eBay devoted to the sale of antique fruit jars, some of which have sold for as high as $30,000.
The heyday for jars was probably 1860-1900, when an explosion of patents for various closures were issued, ranging from the effective to the absurd.

Greg Spurgeon Antique Fruit Jars Color Guide
For a jar sitting on a wall shelf, the source of reflected light behind the item is reduced by the jar’s proximity to the wall.....that is, we are looking thru the jar and into its shadow.
The same jar, when moved away from the wall, or placed in a window, or held to a light, seems lighter-colored in appearance.
In spite of this washing-out effect, jars and bottles shown in a window do seem to better display their character and embossing, and also have more of a sparkling appearance in the bright, natural light.

 Collecting Antique Fruit Jars
I started collecting antique fruit jars nearly thirty years ago (minus a few years that I took off to go to college.) I've found fruit jar collecting to be an interesting and diverse hobby.
This whole fruit thing started for me when I was around twelve years old and I discovered a cache of old jars in a cellar under a c.1900s farm house.
As was the practice of the time, farm families frequently exchanged a jar of this for a jar of that and different jars made it into the basements of different families.

A Brief History of the Home Canning Jar   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
In 1882, Henry William Putnam of Bennington, Vermont, invented a fruit jar that used a glass lid and a metal clamp to hold the lid in place.
These "Lightning jars" became popular because no metal (which could rust, breaking the seal or contaminating the food) contacted the food and the metal clamps made the lids themselves easier to seal and remove (hence the "Lightning" name).
The Economy jars were among the first wide-mouth jars, and thus, were easy to fill.

 eBay - Antique
Let's start by defining the word "antique." When used in reference to collecting, antiques are objects that are over 100 years old.
Items used or present during unusual historical circumstances will be greatly increased in value; consider the value of a saber used by a nondescript Union army officer during the Civil War, and then consider the value of a saber used by cavalry leader John Buford at the Battle of Gettysburg.
While determining the value of an antique may be important, you also need to consider why you are collecting.
