Jesus.Com.Au - Library - Documents - Josephus: On Jesus, Herod, John the Baptist
This excited a very among great tumult among the Jews when it was day; for those that were near them were astonished at the sight of them, as indications that their laws were trodden under foot; for those laws do not permit any sort of image to be brought into the city.
Hereupon the Jews, as it were at one signal, fell down in vast numbers together, and exposed their necks bare, and cried out that they were sooner ready to be slain, than that their law should be transgressed.
Now the Jews were so sadly beaten, that many of them perished by the stripes they received, and many of them perished as trodden to death by themselves; by which means the multitude was astonished at the calamity of those that were slain, and held their peace.

Jews could be seen wailing at the Western Wall, an emblematic scene bracketed both by the destruction of the Second Temple and the coming of the Messiah (and restoration of Israel) and by the crucifixion and the second coming of Christ.
Jews, they insisted, were not relics of Biblical antiquity, but modern exponents of a universal religion and loyal citizens of the countries in which they lived.
Jews were not the target audience for this and other exhibits of Biblical archeology or Biblical science, as Adler preferred to call this field, in recognition of the living material it included.

In like manner the Jews that were in Shushan gathered themselves together, and feasted on the fourteenth day, and that which followed it; whence it is that even now all the Jews that are in the habitable earth keep these days festival, and send portions to one another.
The Jews also did all together, with one voice, salute Alexander, and encompass him about; whereupon the kings of Syria and the rest were surprised at what Alexander had done, and supposed him disordered in his mind.

Now the Jews that were at Alexandria were in great concern for those men, whose lot it was to contend for the temple at Jerusalem; for they took it very ill that any should take away the reputation of that temple, which was so ancient and so celebrated all over the habitable earth.
And as the Jews leaped from the top of one house to the top of another, and pursued them after that manner, it thence happened that the pursuit was so very surprising.
However, this prosperous state of affairs moved the Jews to envy Hyrcanus; but they that were the worst disposed to him were the Pharisees, (28) who were one of the sects of the Jews, as we have informed you already.

In the first century, no less than in the nineteenth, the Jews were at once the most exclusive and the most universal people in the civilized world.
It was necessary that they should be unlike other nations, lest through amalgamation with them they should corrupt the legacy of monotheistic faith with which they had been intrusted; at the same time representatives of the nation must be in the midst of all other nations, to serve there as witnesses of the true God.
Wide as was the Roman Empire, there was scarcely a corner of it into which the Jews had not penetrated by the age of Augustus.

And when the Jews had suffered this loss, the Arabians raised their spirits after their defeat, and returning back again, slew those that were already put to flight; and indeed all sorts of slaughter were now frequent, and of those that escaped, a few only returned into the camp.
When the Arabians were informed of this, and when those that hated the Jews, and pleased themselves with aggravating the reports, told them of it, they raised their spirits, as if their enemy's country was quite overthrown, and the men were utterly destroyed, and thought there now remained nothing that could oppose them.
The Jews pursued them, but could not get in with them, but sat round about the bulwark, and watched any assistance that would get in to them, and prevented any there, that had a mind to it, from running away.

TBK - The Jesus Forgery: Josephus Unveiled
For centuries a brief paragraph in "Antiquities of the Jews" by the Jewish historian Josephus (37-100 CE) has been cited as proof of the existence of Jesus Christ.
When addressing the mythical nature of Jesus Christ, one issue repeatedly raised is the purported "evidence" of his existence to be found in the writings of Flavius Josephus, the famed Jewish general and historian who lived from about 37 to 100 CE.
Indeed, Josephus was a well-educated Jew who lived in the precise area where the gospel tale was said to have taken place, as did his parents, the latter at the very time of Christ's alleged advent.

The next obvious query is Origen's correctness of the reference to "the 18th book of his Antiquities" in "Against Celsus".
However, there are no earlier texts which can prove whether any part of the Testimonium Flavianum was actually written by Josephus; and there is reason to be unsure of the veracity of Origen himself as a chronicler of history.
