Today (9-4-06) marked the successful ending of the inter-service exercise under the code name "RIO - ANTIRRIO 2006", that took place yesterday and today in Rio, department of Achaia.
The Hellenic Police Force Headquarters organized this exercise in cooperation with G.E.F.Y.R.A S.A and the representatives of the parties involved.

It straddles the entrance of the Corinthian Gulf to connect the city of Patras, Greece's third-largest sea port, with Aitoloakarnania and northwestern Greece.
It will allow vehicles to traverse the distance from Rio to Antirrio in about four minutes, greatly reducing the time currently needed for crossings by car ferry and also eliminating problems caused by bad weather.
The official inauguration ceremony will take place on Saturday evening at 18:00 when the mayors of Rio and Antirrio and their municipal councils will walk across the bridge to meet in the middle of the straits.

The Rio-Antirio bridge (Greek: Γέφυρα Ρίου-Αντίρριου) is a cable-stayed bridge near Patra on the Peloponnese, linking the towns of Rio and Antirrio on the western mainland Greece, thus connecting with the rest of Europe.
The bridge dramatically improves access to and from the Peloponnese, which could previously be reached only by ferry or via the isthmus of Corinth at its extreme east end.
Charilaos Trikoupis was a 19th century Greek prime minister, and suggested the idea of building a bridge between Rio and Antirrio; however, the endeavour was too expensive at the time, when Greece was trying to get a late foot into the Industrial Revolution

The premier said the project was progressing at record speeds and was expected to be ready on time, while the Olympic Torch relay is scheduled to pass over it in August.
The bridge is considered a pioneering project from the technical side, being among the longest suspension bridges in the world and having the longest deck span, as well as the deepest foundations.

 Wave of strikes hits Greece
The construction workers’ trade union federation called a strike for 26 November 2003, demanding workplace health and safety measures, minimum pay and minimum pension increases, unemployment benefits equivalent to 80% of wages and enshrinement in law of their social insurance rights.
Finally, repeated strikes by 100% of maritime workers on ferries between Rio and Antirrio have caused major problems, including interruptions of communication between eastern and western Greece.
Although the courts declared their strike illegal and excessive, the maritime workers stayed out on strike for seven days, demanding better pensions, pay increases and regulations to combat the unemployment expected to hit their sector after the bridge is open to traffic.

It's a very nice suburb of Patras where you can have a coffee or a meal under the view of Patraikos Kolpos.
Also there is the biggest bridge in Europe and a ferry-boat from Rio to Antirrio which links Peloponese witch the central Greece.
It's a very important archeological place with many great see-sights.

Charilaos Trikoupis was a 19th century Greek prime minister, and suggested the idea of building a bridge between Rio and Antirrio; however, the endeavour was too expensive at the time.
Prior to the building of the bridge the two coasts were linked by ferry service which still continues today.

Patra, and the bridge of Rio - Antirrio
At the bottom you see the bridge of Rio-Antirrio (Ρίο-Αντίρριο) that connects Peloponnesus with the mainland at the point of closest proximity, joining the two little towns of Rio and Antirrio.
This bridge was envisioned as a possible project in the 1920’s, but was finally constructed and given to the public in 2004.

 Kim's Trip to Greece
On our next leg of the trip, we crossed the Gulf of Corinth (by ferry).
They are currently building a suspension bridge across the gulf between Rio and Antirrio.
We stopped for a little while in Nafpaktos to look at the Venetian fortress surrounding the city.
